Greetings!
Welcome to the 2012 edition of encore!
I am excited to share news of the 2012 BUTI season with you - a summer that was marked by excellence, engagement, and access:

Excellence:
More than 350 gifted young artists from around the globe joined us this summer to experience the magic of Tanglewood.  These outstanding students thrilled audiences with performances of Beethoven's Mass in C Major, works by Michael Gandolfi and Leonard Bernstein, the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz, and Mahler's Sixth Symphony.  On August 4th, the "best of the best" students, chosen by the faculty based on their exemplary performance in their respective programs, performed in a BUTI Honors Recital at Ozawa Hall.

Engagement:
Each week, BUTI students gave free chamber music performances for Berkshire residents and visitors at Lenox Library and Lenox Commons, as well as in local assisted-living and nursing home communities.

Access:
Thanks to the unprecedented support of friends and foundations, BUTI was able to award more than half a million dollars in scholarships to gifted students with need. These awards made it possible for 152 students - 43% of our total enrollment - to thrive in the nurturing and inspiring atmosphere of BUTI.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of encore!, and urge you to stay in touch, share your news and BUTI memories with us, and to join us next summer at Tanglewood.

BUTI in the Berkshires

This summer, young artists from the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Piano programs gave free, weekly chamber music performances througout the Lenox community. These performances, held in outdoor public spaces, local historical sites, and nursing homes, gave students the opportunity to engage and share their talents with local residents and visitors.

BUTI Snapshots - Laura Broad's Story
Kenneth L. Broad was a gifted singer, a devoted husband and father, a longtime member of the Tanglewood Ushers & Programmers group (TUP), and a BUTI enthusiast. To honor his lifelong love of music, and his passion for music education, Ken's wife, Laura, asked friends and family to make donations in his memory in support of a scholarship for a gifted and deserving BUTI baritone each year.

"My husband, Ken, had a beautiful baritone voice;"  she says, "he loved Tanglewood and always supported the student singers. Establishing a scholarship for a young baritone in Ken's name was one meaningful way to keep Ken's memory alive.  We plan to continue offering the scholarship for as many years as we can."

For the scholarship winners, Laura is not only a generous benefactor - she's also their biggest fan!  A seasonal resident of the Berkshires, she attends all of the scholarship winners' performances and hosts them at her family's table at the annual Ushers & Programmers Picnic.

"I have enjoyed getting to know the four scholarship recipients we have had so far.  Two were entering their freshman year of college, and two were entering their senior year in high school.  From very diverse backgrounds, all four are talented young men and most appreciative of this opportunity to study at Tanglewood for six weeks of the summer.  I enjoy keeping in touch with each of them and following their progress."

We salute you, Laura, and are grateful for your continued, generous support of gifted BUTI baritones in Ken's memory.

Dear BUTI Alumni, Students, and Friends,

What an amazing privilege it has been working with you!

I leave BUTI this month to start a new chapter of my career at WGBH in Boston.  Though I am sad to leave, I know that BUTI will always be a home-away-from-home, and I look forward to enjoying BUTI performances with you at Tanglewood, and cheering for alumni on Facebook!

Thank you for sharing your talents, joys, and laughter with me.  It has been an honor!

Yours sincerely,
