The SocialMe: a master class for healthcare professionals
The ISfTeH Social Media Working Group (#SoMe) will present a master class on Social Media for healthcare professionals. The objective of this master class is to explore ways that healthcare professionals can use Social Media effectively and enable them to increase their return of investment.

With small lectures and work in groups, a panorama of different implementations, good-practices and benefits will be presented. The participants will be facilitated in establishing their own Social Media strategy, integrating Social Media into their everyday practice, and managing the information flow and their online presence. They are also expected to reflect on the impact and consequences of their use, especially with regard to privacy and social responsibility.

This session is aimed at healthcare professionals with at least basic knowledge of use of Social Media. Participants at a beginner level are welcomed, however prior acquaintance with the tools is recommended.

More details will be announced in the coming weeks. Or contact [email protected] for more information or to register your interest.

Benefits of open source software in healthcare

eHealth solutions in community pharmacies: helping to realize professional potential
The Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), representing community pharmacists in 34 European countries, is a strong believer that eHealth can help to overcome some of the key challenges facing healthcare systems in Europe today. eHealth is obviously more than a technology deployment, it is rather a commitment to a networked, patient-centred and accessible health care.

In putting the patient at the center of healthcare, community pharmacists are ready and committed to play their part, going beyond the traditional role of dispensing, and positioning themselves in the front line of patient care with patient-focused services. As such, community pharmacists are active stakeholders in present and future eHealth systems.

PGEU sees significant evidence to suggest that use by pharmacists of electronic health records has a significant potential: to improve patient safety, to support the development of new patient-focused services, to improve interdisciplinary collaboration within the health care team, and to improve the quality, and ensure continuity, of care.

The full PGEU statement on eHealth is available at www.pgeu.eu/en/policy/9-e-health.html
.

Med-e-Tel 2015 will feature a session focused on eHealth and telehealth solutions in community pharmacy settings. PGEU and also FIP (the International Pharmaceutical Federation) will contribute to this session, together with several other community pharmacy stakeholders, providing a look at current practice and experiences.

netCare service in Swiss pharmacies extended
From 2015, all Swiss pharmacies will be able to participate in the netCare project from pharmaSuisse, the Swiss Association of Community Pharmacists. netCare combines healthcare and medical advice in pharmacies with the ability to connect to a physician through videoconsultation. Two hundred pharmacies participated in the successful pilot phase which started two years ago. The benefits of the netCare service, developed in collaboration with Medgate and Swisscom, will now be made accessible to a wider audience.

In netCare pharmacies, patients can receive 'walk-in' medical advice and support for minor injuries or illness. The pharmacist conducts an initial screening based on scientific algorithms developed by physicians and pharmacists, and then decides whether to directly deliver medication, whether to consult a doctor (in the Medgate telemedicine center), or whether to refer the patient to another healthcare professional.

This allows patients to easily get immediate assistance and help for simple health problems and it unloads emergency departments and family physicians so they can focus on patients who need their help most.

Over 5000 netCare consults were offered during the pilot phase between April 2012 and June 2014, most often for urinary tract infections (approx. 40% of cases) and conjunctivitis (25%). 73% of cases could be fully treated by the pharmacist. In 20% of the cases, a call to a doctor via a teleconsultation was made. Martine Ruggli, head of interdisciplinary collaboration at pharmaSuisse, said: "The initial investment to establish a new service is very high. Without real motivation, such a project is difficult to implement, but pharmacies that have successfully implemented netCare do not want to give up the service."

The experiences of the pilot phase will now be included in the full launch phase. The video transmission system that was used in the initial phase, will be replaced by the Vidia videoconferencing solution from Swisscom, which offers greater flexibility and reduces infrastructure costs. All recordings in sound and image are transmitted in coded form and exclusively use the Swisscom servers. Confidentiality is guaranteed. Pharmacies can also enter more easily into the project. The quality of the netCare service will be guaranteed through ongoing continuing education
of all stakeholders involved.

Orange and USAID join forces to boost mHealth innovations across Africa
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and global telecommunications operator Orange announced a new alliance to develop innovations in mobile health (mHealth). These mHealth innovations will help treat and care for individuals in developing countries across Africa.

"With the increasing use and decreasing cost of mobile phones, leveraging mobile phone technology to accelerate access to health information and services is a game changer," said Dr. Ariel Pablos-Mendez, USAID's Assistant Administrator for Global Health. "USAID's partnerships with private companies, such as Orange, enable us to have a larger impact in a cost-effective manner."

The first phase of these health system-strengthening programs will leverage the expertise, technology and local resources of both organizations to improve quality of care and ensure that health services are readily accessible to the public at large in countries such as Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Niger.

Future services will use integrated mHealth platforms and Orange mobile networks to communicate alerts and share resources around family planning and maternal health. Healthcare workers will be able to use the technology to share medical expertise, collaborate with specialists regardless of location, and improve patient care. In addition, the public will be able to access health information via the mHealth platforms. Orange's global footprint, with mobile and fixed networks in 20 countries in Africa and the Middle East, will provide seamless and reliable access to these services.

"There is a tremendous amount of good that mobile technology and digital innovations can bring to improve the quality of healthcare to those less fortunate," said Thierry Zylberberg, Director, Orange Healthcare. "Together with USAID, we are creating innovative mHealth platforms that open up the opportunities for remote patient monitoring or healthcare workers to make better-informed decisions and facilitate quality care for all citizens."

Educational game accredited by nurse organization
For the first time ever during its 43rd international congress, EDTNA (European Dialysis and Transplantation Nurse Association) has accredited a mobile solution, "Phosphorus Mission", developed by Sanofi, which is aiming at bridging gaps in chronic patients' care.

In its accreditation letter, EDTNA described Phosphorus Mission as an excellent resource for the nephrology community and a very good teaching and learning aid for patients: "highly interactive and engaging and could be used by all age groups including patients, carers and extended family."

While Professional or Academic organizations usually reserve their accreditation to scientific forums applying demanding standards, in the case of Phosphorus Mission, EDTNA has applied the same rigorous evaluation process involving 10 anonymous and senior testers around the globe. The gaming solution scored high within the predefined informative and usefulness criteria.

For healthcare professionals, accreditations suggest that approved mobile solutions may now be regarded as useful tools for patients' education. Caregivers are encouraged to enrich their therapeutic education armamentarium to include trusted and entertaining educational methods to fulfill the new needs of their 21st century patients.

For chronic patients, accreditation of an app by a leading healthcare organization provides reassurance in the context of the exploding health apps offer. In the case of Phosphorus Mission, patients are encouraged to see that education on their disease management can safely and efficiently be associated with gaming and fun.

With 3200 members (Nurses, Dieticians and Physicians) active in 72 countries, EDTNA's accreditation of a Sanofi solution is opening a new era for collaborative solutions between Sanofi and other professional organizations towards 'beyond the pill' innovations in strategic therapeutic areas with important medical needs

Empowering women in telemedicine and eHealth through education
The ISfTeH Working Group on Women (WoW) and its partners, Millennia2025 Foundation, Connecting Nurses, Connecting Midwives and Klughammer, will again organize a Women and eHealth session at Med-e-Tel 2015 on the theme of "Empowering Women in Telemedicine and eHealth through Education."

The session aims at creating the momentum along the various tools for education using ICTs to reach women as beneficiaries, healthcare professionals and leaders in telemedicine and eHealth.

Speakers will be coming from South East Asia, Central and Latin America and Europe. Participants will be able to share their experiences in education with the speakers during an open dialogue session. Young women are encouraged to share their experience and ideas in this creative and interactive session.

The overall objective of the WoW Working Group is to catalyse the interest of ISfTeH members and other stakeholders on gender issues in telemedicine and eHealth. For more information, contact Veronique Thouvenot at [email protected].
