Looking for a great local
food resource here in North Carolina?

 About NCGT

GOAL | Bring more locally-grown foods - produce, meat, dairy, and seafood - into mainstream retail and food service supply chains, thus enhancing food security by increasing access to local foods and by strengthening the economics of small to mid-sized farm and fishing operations.

STRATEGY | Identify the most promising solutions by which local production and associated value-added activities can enter local retail and food service markets, pilot these solutions in North Carolina, and evaluate and report the results for the benefit of other states and regions.

NC Growing Together and the NC 10% Campaign Connect Farmers and Buyers

On March 2 at the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, approximately 20 North Carolina growers and buyers sat across tables from each other, in a kind of business development speed-dating.  They had eight minutes to decide if they were potentially a good fit for each others' business.  Attendees included produce farmers from all over the state and buyers including Lowes Foods and Sysco/Fresh Point.

Farmer Jeff Bender of Bender Farms in Norlina, NC, explained why he made time to attend the event.  "We're not set up to be huge growers.  I'd rather raise a smaller acreage and sell it to someone I know.  So much of it is relationships -- something like this gives you the chance to sit down face-to-face  and make a deal."

Based on both farmer and buyer evaluations of the event, everyone agreed that their time was well spent, and the event would likely lead to new business partnerships. Kevin O'Connell of  The Produce Box said, "The initial conversation is the hardest one to have.  The opportunity to be face-to-face is key: you may not be able to finish [the conversation] but you can look someone in the eye and find out if you are a good fit in a short amount of time."

10% Campaign logo NCGT and the NC 10% Campaign will sponsor another Farmer-Buyer Connections Event in late July.  For more information, or if you would like to attend, please contact Abbey Piner at NCGT partner the NC 10% Campaign.

Updated Pricing and Quality Control Resources for Growers

NC Growing Together has updated several pricing and quality control resources for growers.  To supplement its popular guide Wholesale and Retail Product Specifications: Guidance and Best Practices for Fresh Produce, NCGT recently released a new Slide Set with additional photos to illustrate product quality and information from quality control specialists on proper presentation and packing of product.

Additionally, Updated Price Graphs show weekly wholesale pricing data for nearly 30 commodities sold at the Raleigh Farmers Market during 2011-2014, as reported by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' marketing division.  All resources can be found on NCGT website's Resources For Producers page.

Upcoming Events: Postharvest Handling for Enhanced Shelf Life Workshops

The economic success of fruit and vegetable production is highly dependent on postharvest quality preservation. When marketing fresh fruits and vegetables, understanding the processes affecting product quality during storage and transportation is essential in obtaining a premium price for the product.

To assist growers in developing skills that will provide a competitive advantage within the fresh produce market, NCGT will offer a series of Postharvest Handling Workshops in collaboration with NC State University Cooperative Extension. Participants will learn approaches and technologies to maintain product quality and extend shelf-life, limiting post-harvest disorders and loss of sales.

Workshops will be led by Trish Tripp, NCGT Produce Supply Chain Development Liaison and Dr. George Wilson, NC State Department of Horticulture Science, with assistance from Cooperative Extension staff.

NCGT Partner Merchant's Distributors, Inc. to Focus on Increasing Local Produce Distribution

Mike Burris, who served as the Director of Produce for 27 years at Merchant's Distributors, Inc., the Hickory-based grocery distributor that is a sister company to NCGT partner Lowes Foods, has a new role, focused specifically on increasing the amount of locally-grown North Carolina produce distributed by MDI.

"I'll be 100% focused on local," says Mike, "and this means traveling across the state to build relationships with producers."   For more information on MDI's local produce initiative, contact Mike Burris: mburris@merchantsdistributors.com.
