July, 2015

Greetings!

There's no place like home, unless... the baby is colicky, the teenager is complaining again, the never ending laundry is toppling over, that perfect flexible job you were vying for just got filled by someone other than yourself, or, well... you get the idea.

Motherhood meshed together with everyday life can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, the smallest reminder that you are not alone, can often change your outlook. In the July edition of our eNews we've looked for articles to inspire confidence, build community and provide you with a little strength during those hot, summer days when you might need an extra reminder of how truly amazing you are.

Sincerely,

Alison LaFerlita,

Executive Director

THAT MOMENT ...

When was your moment? You know, the moment when you first realized how hard motherhood is and how much you wished you had someone around who understood? Mom-mentum member Julie Winder's moment was one hot, sweltering night about 2 months after bringing her newly adopted son home from South Korea. And, what got her through the moment was finding her Mothers' Center Group. Read more about her motherhood experience and then consider finding your own support network of moms!

I FORGOT HOW TO BE THE HAPPY MOM

Summer is typically thought of as a time to step back and slow down, but are you able to? Do you ever find yourself in a perpetual cycle of busy? "The other day a friend of mine told me to have fun with my kids." writes Rachel on her blog. She continues on saying in reply, "I don't know if I know how to do that anymore. I know how to be the busy mom -- moving from one urgent to another urgent... but having fun? Laughing? Just being the happy mom? Sometimes I fear I've lost it in the busy and the stress." Can you relate? Read more here.

ULTIMATE MATERNITY LEAVE CHECKLIST

You know that maternity leave once looming off in the distance? If it's starting to feel like it's getting closer, and you're wondering how to prepare, here's a great place to start! Lori Mihalich-Levin of Mindful Return was inspired by a few other fabulous mama leaders to pull together an ultimate maternity leave to-do list for working moms. Happy planning!

ON PROGESS AND PURPOSE: A MOTHER'S

RETURN TO WORK STORY

While pregnant with her second child, attorney and Mom-mentum member Bria Lewis worked full time, mothered a very active toddler and studied for (and passed!) the bar--not an easy feat to accomplish. "When I look back on the road to becoming 'Attorney Lewis,' I have to celebrate what's to come--the opportunity when progress and purpose finally meet." Says Bria of her challenges in returning to work after the birth of her second child. How has motherhood reshaped your sense of professional purpose? Read Bria's story here.

TOP 10 REASONS PROTECTING PREGNANT

WORKERS IS GOOD FOR US ALL

In March, the Supreme Court issued an important ruling for pregnant workers, stating that employers cannot impose a "significant burden" on pregnant workers and that an employer is not justified in making accommodations for a large percentage of non-pregnant workers, while denying the same kinds of accommodations to pregnant workers. This was awesome. But more is needed. Enter the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, a federal bill requiring employers to make reasonable, temporary accommodations for pregnant workers who need them, as long as doing so won't be an undue hardship for the employer. Check out this article, to learn more about why this bill might be helpful.

MEASURING THE NUMBER OF MOMS ON TOP

There's a heap of data on women's leadership, but practically none when it comes to mothers calling the shots. Leith Greenslade wants to change that and has made a fine start with the Motherhood + Public Power Index, a tally of US mothers with the top jobs in business, government, academia, and religious communities. Public Policy Analyst Valerie Young was given the opportunity to interview Leith. Check out Part 1 and Part 2 of this compelling series -- because more Mothers' on top, means more mothers shaping the way our world works.
