"A mother is a person who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take."Isn't that the honest truth! We are doctors, judges, chefs, "taxicab" drivers... and everything in between. Mothers take on all these roles and more, and for 40 years now Mom-mentum has been supporting women and mothers and the many shoes we wear. With your ongoing support, we will continue to do all we can to address the unique and diverse needs of mothers everywhere.

This Mother's Day edition of our eNews is dedicated to celebrating and supporting mothers. Mom's, we are irreplaceable!

Wishing you the Happiest of Mother's Days,

Sincerely,

Alison LaFerlita,

Executive Director

MOTHERS, GIVE YOURSELF GRACE...

"Am I the only mama out there who wonders if she has what it takes? Do any other mamas have moments that she feels like a complete and utter failure? Does anyone else have days that feel like it's all a bit too much, like you just can't get it right, like you just might want to quit?" The Mom-mentum staff says YES to all the above! In her essay titled When you Just Want to Quit Being a Mom, blogger Sarah Sandifer ponders this and more. We think it'll resonate with you -- especially during the rougher moments of motherhood.

READY, SET, RACE FOR MOTHERS

Being a mom is one of the toughest yet most rewarding jobs any woman can have. And on May 6th, people gathered from near and far on the Long Beach boardwalk in support of mothers during our 6th annual Miles for Mothers 5k Run, Walk and Fun Run. There is still time to support the event as teams won't wrap up fundraising until Mother's Day has passed. Learn more about the event and lend your support to one of our many teams here. 100% of the proceeds support Mom-mentum. Plus, be sure to follow our blog and like our facebook page as we continue to share highlights of the amazing experience.

DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A NURSERY AT YOUR OFFICE?

When Rachel Zoe (a distinguished designer, stylist and editor) found out that five of her team members were going to be new moms, an idea came to her immediately -- why not open an office nursery? And that's just what she did. Check out why she calls opening an office nursery one of the best business decisions she ever made.

Share it on the Mom-mentum Blog

Every mother has their own successes and challenges when it comes to returning to the workforce after an extended leave. And now we want to share yours! Our new return-to-work blog series seeks to highlight our Mom-mentum members' diverse perspectives of various experiences in rejoining the workforce. We're collecting the reflections of mothers who've returned part time or full time; own their own business or work for someone else; work from home or in an office. FAMILIES SUFFER...

From the Lack of Paid Leave

Sometimes it takes a personal story to really put things in perspective when it comes to why we need better paid leave policies. In her recent blog post, Public Policy Analyst Valerie Young shared a message she received from a pregnant worker in Atlanta then does what she does best -- connects the dots between public policy and the real lives of mothers. A LONG WAY TO GO TILL WE REACH THE TOP
16th Annual Mothers' Index Released

Global charity Save the Children has released its 16th annual Mothers' Index evaluating and comparing the well-being of women with children in 179 countries around the world. As the wealthiest nation on earth and the world's only superpower, one would think the US would be found at the top... nope! We are not in the top 10, nor even the top 30. The US occupies the 33rd spot, well behind the Nordic nations, western Europe, Greece, Poland, and the Republic of Korea. Why do we fare so poorly? Because our maternal and infant mortality rates are shockingly high, and the percentage of female representation in Congress is dismayingly low. Read the report here.
