March, 2015

Greetings!

"Women have always been an equal part of the past. We just haven't been an equal part of history." said journalist and feminist Gloria Steinem.

MarchMainGraphic.jpgThis March Mom-mentum is celebrating Women's History Month AND the opening of our 1st Mothers' Center 40 years ago. What started as a grassroots, mom-to-mom support program in the 1970's has grown significantly as more communities and more mothers continue to recognize the challenges of mothering and the value of group support. Our Mothers' Centers' history is an important part of who we are! Take a look.

Starting with this eNews, we'll continue to honor our roots and build upon our rich tradition of supporting and inspiring women and mothers everywhere. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Alison LaFerlita,

Executive Director

KEEPING IT REAL
The Motherhood Days We Don't Talk Much About
(But Should!)

"Somehow motherhood became this huge expectation of greatness and awesomeness and now there are so many of us out there running so hard to just keep up... that we're out of breath." says the author of the blog Finding Joy. We think you'll love her truthful reflection on the reality of mothering. It reminds us why our Mothers' Center Groups are so important -- helping us all "keep it real" and know that we're not alone in the challenges we face.

"I'M SORRY TO ALL THE MOTHERS I WORKED WITH"
Reframing the Value of Mothers' in the Workforce

Women are deeply impacted and changed by the experience of motherhood. When we are able to recognize those changes as advantages, not flaws, we're often able to rise the highest. This is what PowerToFly President and founder Katherarine Zaleski did. We found this article and video titled "I'm sorry to all the mothers I worked with" powerful and inspirational. We think you will too!

BEING A WOMAN IS A POSITIVE THING

Mom-mentum's Public Policy Analyst wrapped up her latest blog post with the following: "The measure of our success as a country, is in part determined by our ability to believe and behave like 'being a woman is a positive thing.' Part of getting there is having women in elected office and decision-making positions. Another part of getting there is valuing women in all that they do, including (but not limited to) bearing children, raising families, and caring for other dependent family members." Oh SO good! Read the rest here.
