Will Work for (More) Money
|
Working women in the US have similar attitudes towards their jobs as men do, for the most part. There is one major difference, though. Fewer women are completely satisfied with their pay, according to pollsters at Gallup. Maybe it's because they know that there is a pay gap between men and women at every age, and that it widens for women with children. |
"Opting Out" Is Not About Choice |
Half the workforce is capable of having children, and many of us will. Millions of women will pay a high price for the US's lack of policies that recognize family caregiving and paid work are done by the same people. For instance take Barb Butler's case presented in full through a recent article by mother's champion and journalist Brigid Schulte at The Washington Post: "Butler is among the roughly one-third of all college-educated women in the United States who will leave the workforce at some point to care for children or aging parents, research at the Center for Talent Innovation has found, as workplace cultures continue to reward "all in" work and as women are still largely expected to be primary caregivers." |
Don't Face Post-Partum Depression Alone
|
Post-partum depression is most often NOT about hormonal imbalance. It's serious, it's treatable, and don't let somebody tell you to just pull yourself together and deal. An opinion piece from The New York Times recently shared this statement from Robert T. Ammerman, a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center who is the scientific director of Every Child Succeeds (a home visiting program for vulnerable first-time mothers): "We have this idea that during motherhood struggling with emotional issues is normal. The message that a lot of moms hear from families and friends and even professionals who may not know much about perinatal depression is 'be tough and fight your way through it' -- and they don't seek help." |
Will You Win the Boss Lottery?
|
It's a strange thing, but your boss could play a larger role than you think in your life and financial circumstances. A recent MomAgenda column from Women's eNews tells how: "In a country that lacks key supports for parents, bosses wield incredible power in the lives of working mothers. The benefits they provide in areas such as paid leave and opportunities for flexible scheduling and telecommuting can make or break a working mother's career -- and can determine whether her family stays financially afloat."
