The big news last week were the revelations in Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's new book about the sexist and inappropriate comments made to her by other members of the US Senate. Yes, ladies, even in the US Senate, a woman is subjected to unwanted comments about her weight and appearance, no matter her achievements or the dignity of her office. Living while female makes you a target no matter where you are or what you do, sadly, even in the 21st century. We can only hope that more women in positions of leadership will change the culture so that what we do counts more than how we look. Women make good legislators, moving the people's business and cooperating more than their male counterparts. They win when they run and they know how to compromise, which was how our democracy was designed to work. We just need more of them.

When moms ask for work flex, they are more likely to encounter negative consequences than dads who make the same request. According to Fast Company, researchers analyzing the effects of applications to work from home or a non-traditional schedule noticed differentiation by gender. "The results showed that men requesting time off for child care were ranked favorable, while such requests could actually hurt a woman's reputation." One tip to try - stop apologizing. One analyst notes "... that women tend to apologetically ask for what they think is reasonable, while men often ask for what they think they can get with no apologies. That approach immediately puts women at a disadvantage." #NoMoreApologies for being a mom, okay?

Federal law prevents employers from firing workers when they become pregnant, but too many employers still haven't gotten the memo. The Women's Bureau at the US Department of Labor is on the case. Recently in her (Work In Progress) blog, Director Latifah Lyles wrote: "It is not surprising that the vast majority of mothers - 7 out of 10 - work, and women are the sole or primary financial support for their families now more than ever. What's more, over two-thirds of women work during their first pregnancy. Yet, pregnancy discrimination persists in many forms, in all stages of employment - hiring, firing and promotion - and in all stages of pregnancy." Your state may have legal protections for pregnant worker or nursing mothers too. Click here to find out.
