Ah, those tricky, and sometimes painful, tween years. The best thing I ever did to help my daughter (and myself!) navigate the terrain was being part of the Mother/Daughter Book Group." says NAMC Program Director Lisa Kaplan-Miller.
In 2000, when Lisa's daughter was in fifth grade, she joined five other women and their daughters to form a Mother/Daughter book group at the Mothers' Center of Southwest Nassau. The group lasted through to even college years and now, with the daughters scattered across the country, continues on amongst the moms.
At a time when a girl's voice can be easily trampled over by social pressures, the book group created a safe space that allowed their girls' voices to come through clear and confident. And to their surprise, it became a safe harbor for the mothers as well! "We let the girls lead the way - choosing the books and leading the conversation." shares Lisa. "Once the discussion finished, the girls would run off to talk, and in a split second we mothers were also deep in conversation."
The NAMC is almost complete with a working guide to help our members and their tweens use a book group to form this valuable and unique bond. Want to know more? Contact Lisa Kaplan-Miller.

From Your (Wo)Man in Washington: SCOTUS Decision Impacts Women's Health
A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision showed how personal public policy can get. The new health insurance law requires all policies to cover a variety of contraception methods. A corporate employer, Hobby Lobby, objected to the inclusion of four types of contraception on the grounds that they violated the religious beliefs of the corporation's owners. The U.S. Supreme Court held that the corporation's religious freedom could not be restricted by the federal health insurance law, and that Hobby Lobby did not have to offer, through its employer-sponsored health insurance, the birth control it objected to.
Supporters of the decision say that it is a great step in protecting the free exercise of religion in the U.S. Opponents believe that the constitutional right to religious freedom should not apply to for-profit corporations, and that allowing businesses to opt-out of the application of federal law on religious grounds will be a disaster for women and interfere with their freedom to make the most appropriate medical decisions.
