Brush Stroke
June 2014

Things typically slow down a bit in the summer, but this summer is different! We've got some exciting things planned for the remainder of the year. So, much like a mother preparing for her new baby to be born, we are busy planning and preparing to bring you exciting events and information that supports you both at home and at work.

Enjoy this issue of the NAMC eNews!

WebinarNAMC Intern: Introducing Aria Vitale
The NAMC is excited to be joined this summer by Aria Vitale, an intern who will assist our staff with public relations, social media marketing and event planning efforts. Aria is from Glen Head, New York and is a pre-med student majoring in Psychology at Georgetown University.

On campus, she's a member of the Georgetown University Women in Leadership (GUWIL) Events Committee. This organization aims to "bridge the gap between academic and professional life for undergraduate women," encouraging them to pursue leadership positions and aiding them in the development of the tools they need for success.

Aria shared, "I had a strong desire to continue working with women's organizations over the summer, and was connected with the NAMC by the Women's Fund of Long Island. I am currently working on designing a scholarship and helping to prepare for the Women's Leadership Conference in November, among other projects."

Please help us welcome Aria!
MCspotlightSpotlight on Our Growing Families
Kimberly N. Dobson

Birth stats: Elijah Omotade was born on February 8, 2014 weighing 6 lbs. and 15 oz. and measuring 20 inches long.

All in the family: The family of now four consists of Kimberly, her husband Bo and big sister Brianna (age 2 ½).

About the mother: Kimberly has worked as an Attorney at Law for six years with Jackson Lewis P.C., a law firm with a long history of NAMC support through our Work/Life Initiatives.

NAMC connection: Kimberly is a member of our Women's Leadership Committee and has attended all but one of the NAMC's past Work/Life Conferences (only missing in 2011 due to the birth of her first daughter). "After giving birth to my daughter, I started to truly appreciate the amazing work the NAMC does," said Kimberly. "I am grateful to have an opportunity to get more involved this year, and I'm excited for the new direction the organization is taking."

On Thursday, June 12th, the NAMC held its V.I.P. Kickoff Breakfast at the Hilton Long Island Huntington in anticipation of our Achieving Extraordinary: Women's Leadership Conference scheduled for November 7th.

Attended by nearly 100 guests, the breakfast (sponsored by Lois Cooper and Denise Davis of Adecco) was a great success. Committee member Katie Coleman (pictured above) of Siena Wealth Advisory Group added a unique flare as the event moderator. Guests received sneak-peaks of the conference workshop topics and were introduced to keynote speaker Fawn Germer, who provided a personal message (watch it here!) and insight into her Achieving Extraordinary philosophy.
Attendees left the event inspired and excited for November's conference while one lucky person walked away with tickets to see Wanda Sykes (courtesy of Latasha Jacobs, NYCB Theatre at Westbury).

Advocacy1When Women Succeed, America Succeeds
On Tuesday, June 3rd NAMC staff member Kate Fineske managed to connect with some powerful women during a last minute, impromptu stop in Toledo by the "When WOMEN Succeed, AMERICA Succeeds" bus tour. The bus drove from Seneca Falls, NY all the way to Chicago to help promote an economic agenda for women and families, carrying in it U.S. House of Representatives' Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro, Donna Edwards, Joyce Beatty and Marcy Kaptur (among others).

Kate, who lives in Sylvania, Ohio, was fortunate to gain access to a small, informal dinner at Ruby's Kitchen, a female-owned, small restaurant located in Toledo, Ohio. "I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak casually, one-on-one with Nancy Pelosi." said Kate of her experience. "I spoke about our organization's mission, and then shared my personal story about how my career was impacted by motherhood and the availability of quality, affordable childcare. Ms. Pelosi then told me a brief story of her experience as a mother of five working in Congress."

AdvocacyTime for the Family Act

There's a big push coming from women's advocates in Washington and across the country in favor of paid family leave. Plans have been underway for months, and a carefully orchestrated campaign will soon be rolled out to publicize the FAMILY Act, explain how it works, and give people the means to push Congress for its passage.

Paid leave is the norm everywhere else in the civilized world, where mothers have weeks - or even months - when a baby is born or adopted, and most fathers do too. The U.S. version would be paid for by small contributions from both the employer and employee, about $1.50 per week each.

With mid-term elections coming up in November, paid family leave could become a campaign issue, if the buzz is loud enough that candidates must address it. I'll certainly be doing my part to make that happen. You can, too. Stay tuned!
The National Association of Mothers' Centers (NAMC) focuses its work in three areas: Motherhood, Work/Life and Advocacy in order to provide programs empowering mothers, fathers and caregivers to find solutions for their families, work lives and personal lives.
