Mother's Day officially began in 1914 after Anna Jarvis campaigned to make Mother's Day a national holiday. This year we celebrate 100 years of honoring our mothers, grandmothers and the maternal bonds that are formed. The board and staff at the NAMC want to wish all mothers of all walks of life a very happy and peaceful Mother's Day! Enjoy this issue of the NAMC eNews! Best wishes,
Alison La Ferlita Executive Director

Highlights from the Miles for Mothers 5K
We officially kicked of the Miles for Mothers 5k with a bang! A record of over 150 people registered for the race. Those visiting the boardwalk were greeted by the NY Cosmos. Sportset of Rockville Center set up a fun obstacle course for the kids. The new Jac's Bakery and Bistro, an all gluten-free bake shop, as well as European Wax, Beach Bum Tanning and Orange Theory Fitness were also there to support the race. Kids had their face painted by Party Couture and moms were able to shop at the Frippery table and Mina's Absolutely Fabu-Less.
Runners received refreshing bottles of water, provided by South Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a free copy of Brain, Child Magazine and lunch coupons from Zorn's. The kids enjoyed fruit pouches provided by Go Go SqueeZ. The course was well-marked, thanks to the Long Island Road Runners Club Race technicians. The volunteers (especially the cheering squad) were awesome. It was a fabulous day for all and we are very grateful for everyone's participation!
The winners ... Ruth Albright of Wyandanch, a 50-year old mother, came in at 22:59.8 and won top female overall. Top male overall went to Dan Guererri of Geneva with a total time of 22:52.0. Congratulations to Ruth, Dan and all of our winners.
Stay tuned for the results of our top fundraiser! If you were unable to walk with us, there's still time to donate here in memory or in honor of someone special. Your donation helps us encourage positive change and support mothers everywhere. Thank you!
Save the date for the 6th Annual Miles for Mothers event on Saturday, May 2, 2015! You won't want to miss it!

Mothers Central Spotlight on Mind in the Making
 | Eileen Marriott and Karen Buckley present the Mind in the Making program to attendees of last year's NAMC Leadership Council Retreat |
Did you know children are born engaged in learning, but this engagement fades for far too many of our children? In 2010 Ellen Galinsky, president and co-founder of the Families and Work Institute, released the book and video series Mind in the Making. The information offers concrete skills which parents can use to produce environments that children would thrive in while developing the skills they need to be life-long learners. Those essential skills include:
- Focus and Self Control
- Perspective Taking
- Communicating
- Making Connections
- Critical Thinking
- Taking on Challenges
- Self-directed, Engaged Learning
The NAMC was chosen as a grant recipient to help translate the book and video series into discussion guides for our membership. To learn more about these important resources, click here.
