DC Dispatch:

The White House Announces a Work Family Summit

President Obama has focused attention again on the intersection of motherhood and politics by announcing a work family summit on June 23, 2014.  Meeting with a dozen women lawmakers at the White House, he announced his intention to highlight the issues of paycheck fairness, inadequate child care, the lack of paid leave, and women's job segregation into lower paid work.  He made a point of connecting the dots between "womens' issues" and familyeconomic security.  "Because of inadequate childcare, or the inability to get paid leave for a sick child or an ailing parent, they end up suffering the burdens - and, by the way, that means families are suffering the burden, because, increasingly, women are a critical breadwinner for families all across the country."  Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator from New York, nearly missed the meeting because her son was sick at home and she struggled to find a sitter.

Expecting ... A Rough Time

Pregnancy discrimination continues to occur in the workplace and the number of claims filed goes up every year.   New sociological research shows that stereotypes about pregnant workers are the cause for many dismissals. "Employers who illegally fire workers for being pregnant often attempt to skirt discrimination laws by smearing the employees as tardy, poor performers, or by chalking up their termination to company restructuring-even in cases where worse-performing employees, who were not pregnant, were allowed to remain on staff, and "company restructuring" turned out to be code for replacing pregnant workers," according to Mother Jones magazine.  So remember the law, ladies - an employer cannot cite concern for your unborn child as a reason for termination, or refuse to accommodate you in the same reasonable way a worker with a similar temporary disability (needing water, or to sit down, or more frequent bathroom breaks) would be accommodated.

How Long Does It Really Take to Recover From Childbirth?

Research from Great Britain suggests that the 6 week benchmark may be must a fantasy.  The physical recovery and the mental transition to motherhood may take much, much longer, in fact, up to one year after the birth . This is devastating news to US mothers, who have no right to paid maternity leave, and where the majority of new moms are back at work within a few months of delivery.  But it sure does explain a lot of the frustrations and difficulties experienced in those early months - after all we're pregnant for 9 months.  Adjusting to being un-pregnant is hardly going to happy overnight.

What We're Up Against

Oh, the lengths lawmakers will go to limit women's control over their own lives!  In Pennsylvania, a bill protecting victims of domestic violence was all set to be passed, when some lawmakers made it conditional that a ban on all paid leave legislation in the state be passed at the same time.  Advocates didn't want to lose the ability to push for paid sick days and paid family leave, necessary to keep workers, especially women, connected to paid employment while dealing with family emergencies.  So they gave up the bill protecting those suffering at the hands of their intimate partners.

It's Not Just About $$ -

Gender Gap in Job Quality Too

I've been told that one of the reasons women earn less than men is that they prefer lower paying jobs because they get more flexibility to care for their children in return.  But why assume there is a tradeoff between compensation and flexibility? Turns out that lower paid jobs generate more stress, less opportunity for promotion, less autonomy, and less flexibility.  So, that's another myth busted.  Women are just getting a raw deal - less money, and less desirable jobs too.

The Baby-Sitting Pay Gap

Dad and Baby

You think I could make this stuff up?  It's long been known that men earn more, even when they work in fields where women are the majority, like nursing, teaching, or administrative support.  Now we know they make more as babysitters, too, even though they comprise less than 3% of all babysitters.  Sheesh.
