Brush Stroke
April 2013
Greetings!

When we think of mothers, images come up of strong women who seem to be able to do almost anything. Mothers turn a house into a home, make sure the kids have everything they need, whip up meals, clean clothes, manage household finances and nurse sick family members back to health. They also add special touches to holidays that create experiences we never forget and want so much to recreate in our own families. And that's just to name a few.

And mothers need support, too. Inside this issue of the NAMC eNews are events and information we hope you'll find useful - especially as Mother's Day approaches.

Best wishes,

Linda Lisi Juergens

2013 Virtual Mile for Mothers Campaign

As the beloved Long Beach boardwalk is being recreated, the NAMC has recreated our Mile For Mothers, one "foot" at a time. Honor a mother in your life and help us fill 5,280 shoes representing the number of feet in a mile.

Each $5 donation gets us one foot closer to walking this mile and reaching our goal. The name of the mother you honor will be displayed on a shoe that walks the mile virtually on our Scroll of Honor on the NAMC website. You'll receive a downloadable certificate of Honor that you can send to the Mother you honor.

Athens Mothers' Center

Pictured above are members of the Athens (Georgia) Mothers' Center during their Spring Open House. Established in 1981, the group routinely provides informal meet-and-greets to help potential members learn more about the many benefits of their group.

The Athens Mothers' Center is proud to be able to provide bi-weekly childcare while hosting member-led discussions and activities that adjust each trimester according to its members' needs and interests. In fact, Mothers' Center Groups everywhere are encouraged to shape programs that are flexible in order to meet individual needs for support while also fostering personal growth and relationship building.

Over the years, how has your need for support as a parent varied? As your needs have changed, have your parenting support networks grown with you? Share your experiences by leaving a comment on the Mothers Central Blog post: Finding Parental Support That Grows With You.

Join us each month as we highlight a different local Mothers' Center across the nation.

What Do Mothers Need

What Do Mothers Need is a compilation of writings by representatives of a variety of motherhood organizations. Andrea O'Reilly, the founder and Director of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement (MIRCI), edited this book and organized its 26 chapters into six sections: Redefining Motherhood; Empowering Mothers; Mothers, Children and Families: Health and Well-Being; Mothers, Education and Social Change; Mothers, Partners and Parenting; and Mothers and Work.

NAMC Co-founder, Lorri Slepian, co-wrote a piece that is published in the book's section on Mothers, Education and Social Change entitled "Influencing Evolution Through an Evolving Revolution."

Nursing Community Support for Breastfeeding Sorely Lacking in Some States

For most mothers, whether or not to breastfeed is simply a choice. Each mother makes the choice to do it or not for various reasons that are personal to her. But for some mothers in the U.S. the choice is not so simple due to the fact that there is very little support for mothers who would like to breastfeed their babies. There may even be strong influences around them pushing them toward formula.

It's not news that the healthiest first food for most babies is breast milk. Kimberly Seals Alers is leading a mission to make support available in areas of the country she refers to as "first food deserts."

Click here to read about the steps she is taking to make support available. You'll also have an opportunity to sign a petition if you would like to add your voice in support of this work.
