Brush Stroke
November 2012
Greetings!

Sending our thoughts and good wishes to all our centers, members and the communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Our hope is that recovery continues at a steady pace and you and your families are safe and warm. Under these conditions, the hard work of mothering is even more so.

This issue includes resources that we hope will make your work a little bit easier.

Best wishes,
Linda Lisi Juergens

SpotlightMothers' Center in the Spotlight
Southern Tier MC

Members of Southern Tier Mothers' Center in Big Flats, New York celebrated just a few short weeks ago together in costumes at their annual Halloween party. Not only do Mothers' Centers often provide activities for kids, but the unique Mothers' Center culture helps parents feel valued in their roles as caregivers.

Have you ever felt unvalued as a parent? This week's Mothers Central Blog post, titled Thank You Mom, is dedicated to all the parents who, at one time or another, have felt under appreciated.

Join us each month as we highlight a different local Mothers' Center across the nation. Don't have a Mothers' Center near you? Learn more about starting a local Mothers' Center group by downloading our New Center Start-up Guide.

 On the International Front
Togo
On 10-10-12 we celebrated International Mothers' Center Day to honor the global MC network. Special recognition was given to the new Mothers' Center in Togo, located on the continent of Africa. Prudence Byetkola Naboud made quick work to gather a group of women in her home country of Togo together and secured a space with the help of the local church. We wish her and all the new Mothers' Center members the best as they grow this invaluable resource for the women and families of Togo.

Resource2Raising Drug-free Kids - What's Your Experience? How to Raise Drug-free Kids

CASAColumbia has collected over 20 years of research in an effort to help parents raise children who are drug-free. Now Joseph Califano, the author of the book How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents and Founder of CASAColumbia, is writing a new edition of the book and wants your input.

CASAColumbia has launched a web forum to connect with parents and engage them in conversation about how to raise drug- and alcohol-free children. They would like to learn from parents about their experiences in talking and listening to their children about alcohol, marijuana, prescription and illegal drugs. They want to know what has worked or not worked for you.

To provide your input and take part in the conversation visit the How to Raise a Drug-free Kid blog
