Letter from Our Principal
by Mr. Harvey Oaxaca, Principal

Our 86th year here at Horace Mann has gotten off to a great start! As I have told many people, we have a firm foundation and our goal now is to "build up", creating new and exciting things here. We have several goals that our School Site Council and Instructional Leadership Team are working to solidify over the next few weeks which will drive our work this year. However, the overall mission and vision for us is to create 21st Century Learners who are college and career-ready and prepared for whatever awaits them after high school.
PTA News
by Tina Wiener, PTA President

Happy Fall! Our goal for the year is to get 100% of our parents involved with school events which directly impact our children.  I encourage all parents to attend the PTA Bistro to be held on Tuesday, September 29th at 8:30am. In connection with cyber safety week, this month's Bistro features information about safe computer and mobile practices for your children.

At this Bistro, we will discuss:
  • Tracking the history of websites your child has visited
  • Blocking websites with inappropriate content
  • Cell phone content, including texting, Snapchat, and Instagram
  • Strategies for managing computer time and content WITH your child
  • Tools Horace Mann uses to ensure that students are navigating safely on the internet while at school.

Important Construction Meeting
An important construction update will be held on Thursday, October 8th at 6:30pm in the Horace Mann auditorium. All parents are encouraged to attend to learn about:
Community Service
by Caitlin Carter
This Tuesday, September 29th is a 2:30 dismissal for middle school. Students can take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a community service activity on the patio outside the cafeteria from 2:30 until 3:15.

We have been approached by a non-profit organization to make cards for people who are participating in a 500 mile bicycle ride down the coast of California this week! Please join us on the patio at 2:30 on Tuesday.

All supplies will be provided and students who participate will earn community service hours.

8th Grade Corner

On October 9th the BHHS Norman football team will take on El Segundo and all 8th grade students are invited to be guests.

8th grade students with a current BHUSD Student ID card will get free admission to the game with a paid adult ticket.

In addition to being VIP guests, 8th grade students will receive a BHHS rubber wristband and mini megaphone provided by the BHHS PTSA, while supplies last.

Character Education Month

October is Character Education
Month, with a District-wide focus on CARING! We encourage students (and their families) to get involved with Healthy Choices Week, October 26th - 30th.

Each day during that week, students will participate in activities encouraging them to make healthy choices and to become caring citizens, at home, at school, and in the larger community.

Stay tuned for more details about how students can get involved!

Advertising in Student Directory

The PTA is accepting business ads to be printed in the Horace Mann Purple Pages, which is a school directory that is distributed to and used by the families of over 500 students, as well as teachers and administrators.

There are several sizes, colors, and page placement options. If you are interested in advertising in the directory or learning more about  advertising opportunities, please click here.
