PTA News
by Tina Wiener

Hope your school year is off to a great start! There are a number of fun, and important, activities taking place at Horace Mann this month. As always, I urge you to take the time to read through the newsletter, to review the calendar, and to open the Sunday e-blasts which you all should be receiving. Last week, we kicked off our 2014-2015 Pledge Drive. We need 100% participation from all families at Horace Mann to continue and to improve our extracurricular programs at Horace Mann and to provide our teachers with items which they need to do a stellar job in the classroom.

Our most important volunteer opportunity this month is getting parents to come in at lunch time and oversee games in the auditorium foyer. We are working to find a more permanent solution for staffing this indoor activity area, but in the meantime, the only way it can stay open is if we have adults in there to supervise. The K-5th grade kids seem to really enjoy it, so I encourage all of you to follow the link for this volunteer opportunity and sign up to help now!

Our family activities this month include Restaurant Night on September 2nd at Fatburger, and a special end-of-summer Husky celebration the weekend of September 19th-21st. Stay tuned for information about a very special movie night that weekend and a night out at the Ice Cream Lab on September 21st (official end of summer)!

We have also scheduled the first of our 2014-15 parent education nights on September 17th, with Dr. Mark Kern speaking about "Exercising the brain: Ways to improve your child's sleep, anxiety and focus without pills." These parent education nights are free to parents in the community and take place several times throughout the year.

Finally, if there are any questions or concerns about construction, the Horace Mann Construction Hotline Number is now in place: 310-882-3066.

Hope to see you all at Fatburger on September 2nd!

PTA Membership Drive
by Sarah Vanek

I want to say thank you to the families who have generously supported Horace Mann over the years, through your financial contributions and as volunteers.

Last year more than 75% of our school participated in the Pledge Drive (a huge increase from previous years).

By the middle of next week, please ask your child for the PTA Pledge Drive Donor Envelope, then complete and return to your child's homeroom teacher by Tuesday, September 16, 2014.

You may also click here to contribute online.

We also encourage you to check with your employer to ask about Corporate Matching Plans for charitable donations.

No gift is too small and every gift is important!

Mann Up! - Lunch Games Volunteers
by Megan Zucaro

We need two volunteers each day at lunchtime from 11am-1pm to oversee the indoor quiet game area for students.

We have created a space for indoor lunchtime activities for our children during construction, utilizing the auditorium foyer. We need two parents each day to supervise board games and card games in this area. You can volunteer for a regular time slot each week, if you can commit to a long-term schedule, or one day any time during the week.

Purple Pages Directory
by Lisa Primavera
For the first time, this year the Purple Pages directory will be available both digitally and in print. But we need your information!

New AND returning families need to input their contact information by September 12th, even if you did it last year, in order to be included in the directory.  Go to this link to add your information.

You can also advertise your business in the Purple Pages.  To review the policies and to fill out a form, click here.
PTA Meeting Report
It was standing room only at our first PTA General meeting of the 2014-2015 school year.  Among other things, we heard committee reports and an update on construction.

To read more about what you may have missed, click here to read the full minutes from the meeting.

Husky Restaurant Night
by Peter Gabayan

Ready for our first restaurant night? Beverly Hills' very own Fatburger has generously invited us for our first night out fundraising. If you mention Horace Mann when ordering, our school gets 25% of the bill.  Thank you Fatburger!

Any questions or concerns, please contact Peter Gabayan, [email protected].

See you all Tuesday, September 2nd between 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

Reflections  - "The world would be a better place if..."
by Brenda Garcia

The National PTA Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through film production, dance choreography, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. The 2014-2015 Reflections program theme is "The World would be a better place if..."

All students must follow the general participation rules, as well as rules for each arts category listed above. For all forms and guidelines, click here. All submissions are due by November 7th. Please contact Brenda Garcia with any questions you may have at [email protected].

Parent Education Night
by Dr. Mark Kern
Exercising the brain? Ways to improve your child's sleep, anxiety and focus without pills.

Many school-age children struggle with attention, anxiety, and sleep issues that are a major hindrance to their school performance and social functioning. Experts will discuss options for interventions that do not involve taking medications, and which have been shown to help improve concentration and sleep while reducing anxiety. There will also be time for a question and answer session.

Please join us on Wednesday, September 17th at 7:00pm  in the auditorium.
