Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Friday, June 7
Did you know that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward? According to a report from the National Summer Learning Association, "A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22% of the school year. It's common for teachers to spend at least one month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills." -(Reading Is Fundamental, www.rif.org) This is whatresearchers have often referred to as the "summer slide."
Stop "Summer Slide"-sign up for our Summer Reading Program. This year's theme is Dig into Reading! Dig yourself into frenzy at our construction-themed kickoff! First, sign up for Summer Reading, then complete a variety of activities to get a tasty snow cone. Play Giant Volleyball, run our Obstacle Course, decorate a visor, and dig and build to your heart's content at our Construction/Destruction Zone!

Project KidSight & Michigan Child Identification Program
Also at the Summer Reading Kick Off: Olive Masonic Lodge #156 will be providing a free child identification program. The program will be conducted between the hours of 12-2pm at our Summer Reading Program Kick Off. Each child that goes through the process will receive a dental impression as well as a CD containing a photo, video, digital fingerprints and their vital information. Parents or guardians of children who participate must be present and fill out a permission slip for the child to receive this service. Learn more about the Michigan Child Identification Program.
Project Kidsight is a free vision screening program for children from ages six months to five years that local Lions Club volunteers conduct throughout the year.
Project Kidsight's state of the art PediaVision digital camera quickly takes a picture of the child's eyes and immediately lets us know the results of the analysis. A report can be printed on-site indicating the "Pass" or "Refer" status, along with all pertinent detail. Learn more about Project Kidsight.
