Library Awarded Two Grants to Fund Authors in Chelsea

The Chelsea District Library has been awarded two grants to support its Authors in Chelsea program; $1000 from our own Chelsea Education Foundation (CEF) and $6000 from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).  Authors in Chelsea provides children close contact with nationally known award-winning authors and illustrators to explore the art and craft of writing and illustrating, in order to encourage students to read and appreciate literature.

The MCACA grant to will help expand our resources to support this program via online-based learning where students can engage in interesting activities about each author. The CEF grant will purchase the authors' books for participating classrooms and school libraries.

House Passes Version of Personal Property Tax Bill - Action Required

Replace Don't Erase

On Thursday, December 6 the full House passed stripped down versions of the personal property tax (PPT) reform bills (HB 6022, 6024-6026) which reflect the new plan for reimbursement. The House did not pass SB 1065-1072, which repeal the PPT on commercial and industrial property. The reason that the new House bills were passed was to complete the process in lame duck session and to comply with the rule requiring new legislation to wait five days before passage in the opposing chamber. This week is expected to be the last week of session.

The Michigan Library Association is still seeking amendments to this legislation including trying to ensure that the legislation is not enacted unless reimbursement funds are guaranteed, that the amount of reimbursement be greater than 80%, and that all libraries receive reimbursement regardless of the percentage of their tax revenues lost. Please continue to contact your legislators regarding the library community's concerns about this legislation and the impact on your local library.

To ensure that your library is properly funded we urge you to let your legislators know how much Chelsea District Library means to you. For more information about the Personal Property Tax bills and to find out how to contact your legislators, click here. [Download sample letter]
