I Geek Music

I Geek Music

Music is FUN!  Playing music in a group is like being on an athletic team. You have to be able to work with others, but not be afraid to step out on your own (solo!).  You meet people who you might not otherwise, and you have at least one interest in common. You do things and go places you might not otherwise go-I have played at Michigan Stadium and Dearborn's Performing Arts Center and Interlochen's Bowl and Corson Hall and in parks all over Michigan. (I still haven't made it to Orchestra Hall, though.)

The library is a wonderful source of both music and the history of people who wrote it and the people who played it.  READ MORE>>

Internet Access in Libraries

LibrariesThe library's role as a technology resource has dramatically increased since 1996, when only 28 percent of libraries offered Internet access. Today, almost all U.S. public libraries offer visitors free access to computers and the Internet.

The downturn in the economy means more users than ever before rely on libraries for free computer and Internet access-and trained staff-to conduct job searches, complete online coursework, apply for government services, and learn new workforce skills.

Opportunity for All

Opportunity for All

According to Opportunity for All: How the American Public Benefits from Internet Access at U.S. Libraries, more than one-third of all Americans age 14 or older-roughly 77 million people-used a public library computer or wireless network to access the Internet in the past year.

Access for Everyone

Access for EveryoneThe report showed that people from all walks of life are using computers and Internet access at public libraries, regardless of their income, race, and level of education.

Teenagers are the most active users, with half of 14-to 18-year olds using them primarily for homework. Low-income adults were most likely to rely on public libraries as their sole access to Internet and computers.

Changing People's Lives

Changing People's Lives

The report shows that some of the highest uses of library computers occurred in three critical areas: employment, education, and health. People found work, secured government benefits, learned about critical medical treatments, and connected with their communities.

Forty percent of library computer users (about 30 million people) used library technology resources to help them with their career needs, 75 percent of whom were searching for a job online. Half of those users filled out applications or submitted resumes.

Supporting Health and EducationHealth Education Searches

Educational needs drew 42 percent of users to library computers, and 37 percent of those users (approximately 12 million students) were on computers to complete homework for a class.

Others (37 percent) were focusing on health issues. Over 80 percent of these users logged on to learn about a disease, illness, or medical condition, then one-third sought out doctors or health care providers. Half of these people followed up by making appointments.

Meeting the Demand

Meeting the Demand

While people are visiting libraries to improve their lives, up to a third of all libraries say they lack adequate Internet connections. Even more libraries report they can't provide the access library visitors truly need. Public libraries are struggling to replace aging computer systems and increase Internet connection speeds. Public and private investments in public libraries must keep pace with demand.
