I Geek Space Exploration

From early childhood on, I have been inspired by space exploration. As a boy I kept a poster of the shuttle Columbia on a wall in my bedroom. Works of fantasy like Star Wars cultivated my fascination with the subject. During a trip to the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC shortly after the Challenger disaster, I met an astronaut for the first time. Then as a teenager, I began reading serious science fiction by Arthur C. Clarke.
All that said I did not really begin to geek space exploration in earnest until I moved to Chelsea, Michigan. The Chelsea District Library has played an integral role. After graduating college, I moved here for a theatre apprenticeship. My income was extremely limited at the time. The library became my source for badly-needed Internet access. In addition to filing my taxes and borrowing DVDs, the library was how I connected with the larger world. READ MORE>>

Chelsea High School Mock Elections 1959
 | |
Pat Merkel and Sandie Karner
|
In 1959, Ralph Guenther was hired to take photographs for the Chelsea High School Yearbook. A set of eleven photos seemed to be the results of the senior mock elections, and a little investigating in the 1959 yearbook revealed that to be true. Take a look at the following pictures on our Stories of Chelsea website and try to guess what "awards" they won. The answers are at the bottom of the page!

Damaged Discs
Public libraries are a great resource for the latest DVDs, CDs, current best-selling books on CD, and video games but often times these discs skip, ruining your viewing or listening experience. If you check out materials and discover a damaged disc, please let us know. A simple note inside the case identifying the damaged disc will alert our staff to the problem so we can clean or buff these items, allowing a better experience for the next person. Notes can also be left on non-Chelsea items; the other libraries in our system will appreciate the note and take care of the problem when the item returns to their library.
