I Geek Mountaineering

As someone who's geeked information my whole life, I spent a lot of my youthful hours in the library. There really was a time when you couldn't find whatever information you wanted in seconds by pressing a few keys on your phone. Reminiscing about that time, of dusty summer days and banana bike rides in to town, brings on a small landslide of memories, images of quiet libraries in towns where I lived while growing up - Ashland, Park Falls, and Phillips, Wisconsin.
I checked out records: Bee Gees Trafalgar, The Archies Sunshine, Three Dog Night Naturally. I carted home mountains of books: For Pollution Fighters Only (numerous times), anything by Herbert S. Zim, and eventually, everything written by Ray Bradbury. I always say he ruined me for life, by setting unreasonable expectations for the sensual beauty of the world. No summer lawn is as green as one of his, no summer day so perfect.
On days Mom dropped me off and went shopping, I curled up and leafed through pages in silent library corners: Hot Rod or Stereo Review magazines, Howard the Duck comics, and suddenly, one day,Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills...

Library Completes Long-Term Reserve Fund Study
All buildings have a finite life expectancy. Different conditions affect longevity, including operation and maintenance, weather and environment, as well as daily "wear and tear." Libraries need to plan for eventual replacement of components and systems, yet few do. Although the library's new construction and renovation of the McKune House are still relatively fresh and new, the library's administrative team considers it necessary to develop a long-term plan to provide for the expected costs of major repair and maintenance of the facility. This can include exterior surfaces, roofing, doors, paint, new carpeting, bricks & mortar, and heating and cooling systems. We refer to this type of plan as a "reserve fund study." In order to complete such a study and become more effectual stewards of our beautiful, historic-downtown building and protect it for future generations to come, the library worked with Michigan Reserve Associates to help research, analyze, and develop a maintenance plan.
