City Officials Make Historic Commitments to Eastwick Residentseastwick

In mid-July, we celebrated with our clients in Eastwick as city officials announced their intentions to move toward community-based planning processes to determine the future of a 135-acre parcel of vacant land and to create infrastructure to mitigate flooding. Such planning processes would be the first for the neighborhood in more than 50 years. For the last three years, we have successfully represented the Eastwick Friends & Neighbors Coalition and residents in their efforts to stave off the environmentally unsound and unwanted proposal to develop the 135-acre parcel and to address severe environmental injustices. Law Center Advocates for Supportive, Positive Measures to Keep Students in Schooltruancy
In June, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams spoke publicly about plans to get tougher on school truancy by filing criminal charges against parents. We were pleased at the DA's interest in getting involved, but we know from our successful case in Lebanon, Pa., that punitive measures such as criminal charges and fees do not solve truancy and are especially problematic for students with disabilities. We sent a letter to Williams and to the School District of Philadelphia, urging the offices to work together to implement positive, supportive measures to keep students in school. Read More

Board Member of the Month: H. Laddie Montague eric
H. Laddie Montague, Jr., is president, shareholder, and chairman of the Antitrust Department, of Berger & Montague, P.C. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Public Interest Law Center for more than 10 years and has been integral in helping the organization grow and stabilize. We are excited to honor him at this year's Annual Event, and proud to showcase him as our Board Member of the Month.

About his contributions to the Law Center, he said, "My being able to make any contribution to the excellent staff of dedicated attorneys has been rewarding. Attending board meetings and learning of the accomplishments of the Law Center, which do so much good for so many people, and hearing at the annual meetings the gratitude of the clients is a joy." Read More

Pro Bono Partner of the Month: Andrew Zivitzprobono
Andrew Zivitz is a partner with Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP. He and others from Kessler Topaz assisted us in securing appropriate kindergarten services for a child with special needs. About aiding the Law Center, he said, "Kessler Topaz has always been a staunch supporter of the Public Interest Law Center and the work it does for the community...getting involved in a special education matter on behalf of a 5-year-old child with the Law Center was a refreshing and gratifying change of pace.
