Michtom Boys

I am reminded of Passover, when Jews celebrate our ancestors' escape from slavery and oppression in Egypt. During the ceremony, we talk about the four sons - the four types of children and how we must explain the exodus to them. To the "wise" child, the understanding one, we tell the whole story, unedited; to the "wicked" child, the one who stubbornly refuses to engage, we insist and point out that we adults care, even if we are thousands of years removed from the events. To the "simple" child, the one of limited intellect, we give a simplified version of the story that impresses the emotional importance, if not the nuance and substance, and even to the child too young to ask, we continue to speak and recite in order that she learns the rhythms and cadences of the story of our freedom so that if feels like her own story before she even knows why. I think of this as I consider how to talk to my boys about Ferguson and our country's racist reality. Especially I remember this: there is no category of child to whom we do not tell the Passover story. It's too important. Everyone has to hear it.

On International Human Rights Day: The Fight for Indigenous Land and Autonomy in Honduras
Children at Garifuna Beach
Honduras is the country with the highest level of homicide of any nation not at war, where government violence and human rights abuses have almost total impunity. It is also the country contributing most to the flood of children who have been recently forced to migrate to the United States--due to that violence and to poverty, both, in part, a legacy of US policy in the region.

Yet something else is afoot. A fierce social movement, composed of many sectors, is pushing back to protect democracy, lives, and political rights. Indigenous peoples, including Garifuna, Lenca, Pech, Miskito, Maya Chortí, and Tolupan, are asserting their human right to autonomy, territory, and cultural survival. Read on

Job Opportunities...

We are hiring a full time assistant manager for our Fresh Food Department, which includes programs such as our Farmstand, summer CSA, winter CSA, and promotional events.  This is a highly demanding position during peak season, and requires a "do whatever it takes" personality that can successfully supervise operations and use business management tools via excel and our POS system.  This person will be responsible for farm stand promotions, social media, CSA member management , and other daily tasks. Advanced knowledge of excel is necessary!

Sunrise of Phila is hiring a garden and culinary instructor to run their gardens as part of the farm-to-table culinary after-school program at South Philadelphia High School (SPHS). This paid position is 20 hours/week and works directly with 14-18 year olds. Students receive a stipend to participate in the program and work in the summer through PYN Work Ready. You will be engaging students in the maintenance of the garden. There is also a "greenhouse" inside the school (really just a lot of grow lights with irrigation and a floor drain).

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation's Junior Farmers Program is currently seeking part-time, seasonal employees to work on a youth gardening program at various recreation centers. These seasonal employees teach children ages 6-12 years old about gardening in after school programs and summer camps. Topics covered include growing food in raised beds, environmental science and nutrition. Each Garden Educator will be responsible for youth garden programming for 5 Recreation Centers in their region. The educators will work with staff, volunteers and community members to maintain and care for various garden projects.
