NEWS

The 2015 Land Bank DRAFT strategic plan was released a week ago, and we have about a week to offer input for the draft. Movement facilitator, Esteban Kelly, invited Amy Laura Cahn from PILCOP and Ariel Morales from Take Back Vacant Land (TBVL) to inform the community about this effort.

You are invited to a short, special session next Monday evening, October 13th from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cedarworks (4919 Pentridge Ave, in Southwest Philly). We are also interested in mobilizing a few volunteers from this event to TESTIFY with the TBVL coalition.

While both farms and gardens utilize unused city space to produce food, urban farms emphasize the commercial aspect of the initiative. Unlike urban gardens, where food is consumed directly by the gardener(s), food from an urban farm is grown for sale and distributed to a broader population. As a result, urban farms offer some unique benefits such as making fresh food available to local consumers, creating potential employment opportunities, and generating income.

So, you might think: "Here's this lonely plot of land in the middle of a food desert in the city where we could grow and sell fresh produce. The residents are going to love it!" Except, of course, the neighborhood residents might not share your enthusiasm. Read on to learn how to cultivate community acceptance.

On September 21, we joined hundreds of thousands in the streets of NYC for the People's Climate March. Billed as the "largest climate march in history," it was significant not only in scale, but in offering a vision of the broad-based movement for climate and economic justice we need.
