Being a part of the food justice movement means that the issue of a socially just and ecologically sound, local economy is important to you. What are some other important factors to consider? Or questions to ask? Does everyone have purpose, are they valued, do they feel safe, cared for and included, and do they have their needs met? Should you get out of your comfort zone and/or go out where there are people other than those in your particular cultural groups? You could be handsomely rewarded with a multi-cultural friend base.

I'm 27. I moved to Philly after graduating from college five years ago, and I've been involved in community building and designing gardens in dozens of its vacant lots ever since, independently and with Historic Fair Hill and the Philadelphia Orchard Project (POP). I didn't move to Philly with any gardening knowledge, but I quickly learned growing food and taking control of vacant space was the most holistic approach to make any of the kinds of inroads I wanted for myself and others.

HomeGrown Music Festival

The Philadelphia HomeGrown Music Festival is an inaugural citywide event conceived to inspire creativity, encourage community and promote the use of open space as performance venues. HomeGrown is an attempt to democratize urban farms and community garden spaces by providing opportunities for local established and emerging artists to showcase their talent at non traditional performance venues. HomeGrown, which promotes homegrown music talent and homegrown food, merges the food sovereignty/food justice movement with the movement of artists and musicians who are independently producing their art and looking for new opportunities to reach new audiences.
