Diversity - Reflections from the Australasian International Evaluation Conference
|
Sarah Mason, Ph.D. student in the Evaluation and Applied Research Methods program at Claremont Graduate University, describes her experience representing AEA on a panel of emerging evaluators at the Australasian International Evaluation Conference in Melbourne.
Arriving at the Australasian International Evaluation Conference in Melbourne, I felt a bit like an imposter.
"Oh, you're from the American Evaluation Association!" one conference goer exclaimed on the first day, looking at the label on my badge.
"Yeah, um, sort of" I replied - less eloquently than I would have hoped - the sound of my slowly dwindling Australian accent echoing through.

Potent Presentations Initiative - Putting It All Together
|
From Sheila B. Robinson, Potent Presentations Initiative Coordinator
Happy fall! Fall is a favorite time of year for many people. Perhaps it's the start of a new school year, the vibrant colors of changing foliage, the anticipation of a holiday season, or simply looking forward to the return of cooler temperatures. (Okay, maybe not so much that last one.) For many of us, fall brings a flurry of activity as we painstakingly prepare our presentations for Evaluation 2015. Excitement builds as we wonder who our audiences will be and how our work will be received.

Policy Watch - AEA Encourages U.N. to Plan for Evaluation of New Sustainable Development Goals
|
From Cheryl Oros, Consultant to the Evaluation Policy Task Force (EPTF)
AEA recently sent a letter to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.) with comments on the newly approved U.N. Agenda 2030: Transforming the World Follow Up and Review (that is, monitoring and evaluation) processes. We applauded the Agenda 2030 for its expressed principle that "follow up and review will be rigorous and based on evidence informed by country-led evaluations and data which is high quality, accessible, timely, and reliable." At the same time, we noted that more was needed to plan for useful evaluations. We proposed the following complementary steps.

You're Invited: Silent Auction Friday Night to Benefit International Presenters
|
One of the highlights of every AEA conference is Friday night's silent auction, which is coordinated by AEA's International and Cross-Cultural Evaluation Topical Interest Group. The proceeds benefit AEA's International Travel Awards and are used to offset travel expenses for presenters who reside in developing countries or countries in transition and to encourage their participation internationally.
What are some of the highlights of the night? The evening is well-known for serving host to a vast array of handcrafted clothing, jewelry, and accessories from across the globe. In addition to the delectable regional delights, including coffees, chocolates, and other treats, the event offers an opportunity to bid and win one-on-one time with several well-known evaluators.
Fancy a good read? You can bid on a range of books signed by your favorite "evaluation gurus." Come prepared to either bid for yourself, or on behalf of the organization you work for, so that your colleagues may also benefit from the collection of books on showcase. All the goodies from around the world make unique and one-of-a-kind gifts for your friends and family!
Feeling inspired? Drop by on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. before you head out for the night. The silent auction is a great opportunity to socialize, network, and wind down from Evaluation 2015 with your colleagues while supporting a great cause.
If you would like to donate something, please feel free to bring it along and drop it at the AEA conference registration desk. If you have any queries, please email Hubert Paulmer, silent auction coordinator, at hubertpaulmer@gmail.com.
