ECCT Discernment Day Approaches
| "Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it I must listen to my life telling me who I am." - Parker J. Palmer Let Your Life Speak |
The Commission on Ministry will host a "Discernment Day" this Saturday for those interested in discerning God's voice in their lives and vocation. For those who are interested in resources for discernment, the Rev. Molly James, Ph.D., Dean of Formation for the Episcopal Church in Connecticut recommends the following books for your consideration:
Here if You Need Me, by Kate Braestrup
Listening Hearts: Discerning Call in Community, by Susan Farnham, et al.
Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation, by Parker Palmer
The group will gather for worship, fellowship, learning and conversation around what it means to be a follower of Jesus, to be called by God to serve God's mission in the world. Those gathered will hear from the bishops on the call to be apostles and disciples as Episcopalians in Connecticut. There will also be a presentation from the Commission on Ministry on the ministry of the baptized and the ordination process in CT. The afternoon includes a panel discussion with a variety of lay and ordained ministers who live out their respective call as chaplains, business people, parish clergy, and mental health professionals. A handout for the day can be found here.

The Rev. Absalom Jones was born and raised as a domestic slave on a plantation in Delaware. He went to night school and also studied theology under Bishop William White (see July 17), from whom he eventually received holy orders. He married, bought a house and land, and finally, at age thirty-seven,he was granted his freedom. Finding that Philadelphia's "white" churches were not truly open to him or his people, he founded the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. He was an exemplary pastor and an able student of Holy Scripture and human nature. He had found Our Lord and in his Name had overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Jones bore witness, with his life, to the truth that all people are bearers of God's image.
Collect
Set us free, heavenly Father, from every bond of prejudice and fear; that, honoring the steadfast courage of your servant Absalom Jones, we may show forth in our lives the reconciling love and true freedom of the children of God, which you have given us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
