School may be out but the Alabama Legislature is still at work!  Have a fantastic summer PTA leaders.
May News: Legislative Issues & More
Legislative News
The legislative season is almost over (June 2, 2015 - 2:00pm).  The Senate adjourned yesterday without acting on the bill to divert education dollars to the general fund. And, the bill to repeal Alabama's education standards disappeared from the week's senate agenda as well.

Both bills, SB496 (Orr) to divert use taxes and SB101 (Glover) to repeal the standards now need unanimous consent to transmit to the House.   Both are effectively dead for the year.

Healthy Living Grants
Does your local PTA want money to educate families on the importance of good nutrition and physical activity?

Funded by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, National PTA will award Healthy Lifestyles grants to 25 local PTAs for grades K-5. Title I schools are strongly encouraged to apply.  Deadline to apply: June 19, 2015

School of Excellence
Deadline to complete the final step in the School of Excellence program has been extended to June 15th.  If your school started this process last fall, do not forget to submit your end-of-year survey results.

The deadline to enroll in the School of Excellence program for next year is Oct 1st.
Training Opportunities
As your PTA transitions to new leadership, make sure your leaders have the training they need to be successful. National PTA offers e-learning courses that will give PTA leaders the tips and tools they need to start the upcoming school year right!  Many PTA councils around the state offer on-site summer leadership training as well.  Contact your council for details.

Some of the popular e-learning courses includes Local Unit President, Local Unit Secretary, Local Unit Treasurer and Board Basics.  Go to PTA.org/eLearning to access the courses.

Officer Information
Alabama PTA requires each local unit and council to submit its list of officers each year.  Use our new online form to make this process super easy!  In order to receive PTA membership cards, this information must be sent to the state office.
