The Risky Busines of Fleet Safety

Several years ago, we published a series of interviews with John Cruickshank, Senior Associate at a national litigation and consulting law firm, dealing with the subject of negligent entrustment. We ran into him again at a recent meeting of the NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter of NAFA Fleet Management Association where he eloquently spoke about legal risks fleet face with vehicle safety technologies.

A specialist in liability evaluation and mitigation, John co-authored a white paper: 'Managing the Legal Risks of Vehicle Safety Technologies' - and it is excellent. He asks, "How does a company balance the need to implement adequate levels of vehicle safety technology to avoid a negligence finding while still trying to maintain business and operational efficiencies?"

His legal philosophy is that the best way to win a lawsuit is to avoid being sued in the first place. You'll find his white paper -- which will help you do just that -- in The Legal Corner.

Want to further impress your boss? If you have been putting off registering for NAFA's International Fleet Academy -- November 5-7 in Orlando -- do it by Tuesday and you'll save your company a cool$100!

NAFA's International Fleet Academy Examines Complexities Of Modern Global Fleet

Register by Tuesday: NAFA is offering early-bird pricing until September30.

International fleets are complicated and challenging. In most cases the work is done by remote, and fleet managers with global fleet duties require specialized knowledge, continual updates on events and happenings in their regions of assignment, and sensitivity to cultures that are not immediately present before them. To do the job well, one needs to take the next step and gain training and experience that is valuable to domestic fleets but absolutely critical to international fleets.

LEARN how NAFA IFA can help you build the specialized skills needed to manage a global fleet.

CEI I-Car class CEI Appraisers Learn Repair Techniques on New All-Aluminum FordF-150

Fifteen members of the in-house Quality Control team from the CEI Group, Inc. (CEI) have completed I-CAR's course in collision repairs on the new 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck, which makes the most extensive use of aluminum of any light-duty vehicle on the road, CEI announced today.

"Auto manufacturers are starting to use more aluminum because of its strength, lighter weight and greater corrosion resistance, but it requires a range of completely different repair techniques than steel," said Greg Neuman, CEI's senior manager of quality control. For example, he said, different welding tools and procedures are required, and repairs must be made in a totally separate and contained area of a repair shop to keep the metal free from any contact with steel, which causes aluminum to corrode.

Hans-Damen-and-Bart-Vanham-TCOPlus TCOPlus Performs Alternative Powertrain Scans for Company Fleets

TCOPlus, the European market leader in independent taxation and fleet reporting, has developed a unique powertrain scan. The program combines the 3 key challenges of alternative engines: driver usage patterns, business case and the implementation.

The objective of the scan is to evaluate the feasibility to include alternative powertrains in the fleet strategy of the company matching the TCO, including all taxation effects, and the different mobility patterns of the employees using the company vehicles.

The Legal Corner

Every company whose business depends upon large industrial vehicle fleets is worried about vehicle accidents. Although the business cost of accidents is substantial, it is the risk of lawsuits and punitive damages that keeps many fleet and risk managers up at nights. One need only drive down the interstate and count the number of billboards advertising plaintiffs' attorneys and trucking accidents to have that idea reinforced.

This comprehensive white paper, presented by Houston legal firm Alaniz Schraeder Linker Farries Mayes, answers the question:

'How does a company balance the need to implement adequate levels of vehicle safety technology to avoid a negligence finding while still trying to maintain business and operational efficiencies?'

Traffic Enforcement Technology

On the roads of the future, it's possible thatspeeding ticketswill be doled out by new automated law enforcement systems instead of by police officers in patrol cars.

Systems now being developed by the federal government to handle vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications in an upcoming connected-car era may have the capability to more precisely track the locations and speeds of individual motorists.

Who gets access to the info in your vehicle's event data recorder? A black box, formally known as an event data recorder (EDR), and informally known as a narc-in-the-box, logs a variety of data regarding the operation of the vehicle in which it's installed.

The good news is that EDRs do not (yet) track your location, nor do they beam real-time information to feds, cops, carmakers, or mothers-in-law. That's what your smartphone isfor.

Big Savings by Increasing Insurance Deductibles

Americans will drive a few miles out of their way to save a couple of cents per gallon on gas and fastidiously check the air pressure in their tires to improve mileage to save a buck or two, but many fail to take advantage of a simple way to save money: raise the deductible on their car insurance from $500 to $1,000.

Car owners save an average of 9% on their premiums with that change, according to insuranceQuotes.com. The savings jump to 16% if they change it from $500 to $2,000. The changes do vary by state: Massachusetts gives the biggest break at 19% for making the $500 change while Michigan provides the smallest cut at just4%.

Return of the $3 Gallon? U.S Gas Prices Are Falling Fast

The national average price of regular unleaded, now at $3.38 a gallon,is down 8 percent from the end of June. Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at GasBuddy.com, thinks this year will bring the cheapest autumn gasoline prices since2010.

Last year drivers spent $40 billion at the pump in September, and Kloza thinks that bill will be at least $2 billion lower in 2014. The savings at the pump should help stimulate consumer spending in other parts of the economy.
