Sierra
30" x 36" | oil on linen
Every trip to the Sierra backcountry leaves a lasting mark on my work.
The massive, Gothic shapes of the Eastern Sierra are truly humbling.

"The winter! the brightness that blinds you,
 The white land locked tight as a drum,
 The cold fear that follows and finds you,
 The silence that bludgeons you dumb.
 The snows that are older than history,
 The woods where the weird shadows slant;
 The stillness, the moonlight, the mystery,
 I've bade 'em good-by- but I can't."
 -Robert W. Service- The Spell of the Yukon

It is so nice to see a thick blanket of snow covering the Eastern Sierra. Even knowing more is needed to pull out of four years of drought,  there is an exuberance to the abundance. It was fun to break out the snow shoes and trek to painting locations in Hope Valley. On a whim, I hiked to Parker Lake, following the dim indentation of a trail in the snow, eventually foundering in snow drifts while trying to make it to the shoreline. I did make it. But, a week later, I am still aching from the effort. This concept of total immersion in the experience of the landscape has informed my art for the past fifteen years. It is one thing to stop the truck safely by the roadside to take reference photos. It is another to return to the truck wet, cold, and exhausted, but holding tight to a little piece of truth.

Thanks again for your interest in my art.
