"The autumn leaves blew over the moonlit pavement in such a way as to make the girl who was moving there seem fixed to a sliding walk, letting the motion of the wind and the leaves carry her forward. The trees overhead made a great sound of letting down their dry rain."

-Ray Bradbury

Fall has mostly passed here in the high plains desert at the base of the eastern Sierra. Remnants of gold and russet hues cling to the skeletal shapes of the Carson Valley cottonwoods. My travels over the past few months have taken me from the Sierra back country to rural towns in Colorado to remote places in rugged northeastern Nevada. As an artist, it is essential for me to travel and experience the subjects that inspire me. I don't always need to have a brush in my hand. Hiking through a grove of aspens, the light wind creating a kaleidoscope of autumn color from the quaking leaves, and (to quote James Lee Burke) "the fall sun both warm and cold on the skin at the same time,"

can fill me with inspiration for several canvases. It is a truly magical season.

Thank you for your continued interest in my art!

This past September I lead a group of artists into the Sierra back country. We camped and painted in Sabrina Basin for six days. With a base camp elevation of 11,000ft., fall was already in full sing in early September. The above field painting is an attempt to express the mammoth shapes of this part of the Sierra through the composition.

Riding in on horses is like going back in time.
The established wilderness areas of the Sierra are true gems.

Battling early clouds and wind to capture the transient light of a Sierra sunrise.
