Quit telling people what they need and start showing them!

Consider the concept of not telling, and start showing, when consulting with patients about restorative outcomes. Start by taking photos of the smile. It is interesting that most people don't really know what their teeth look like. Next, take an alginate impression that is waxed-up to the desired outcome. An index can be fabricated out of the Sil-Tech putty material. When a patient is in for the consultation, simply fill the Sil-Tech index with bis-acryl. Don't forget this next part! The teeth are dried and the interproximal areas of the teeth are blocked out with white rope wax. This is an important step to prevent the bis-acryl from locking into undercuts. The index with the bis-acryl is seated and it is allowed to cure. After the index is removed, photos are taken again of the altered smile with the bis-acryl in place. Now, there are before and after photographs with the suggested alterations. The patient can then see how the changes would look. Because we have blocked out the interproximal spaces with the white rope wax, the bis-acryl is easily removed. Sometimes you can trim the bis-acryl such that the patient can even take them home for continued evaluation. I have found that often when taking them home and giving the patient the opportunity to evaluate and analyze, or to have a spouse evaluate with them, can be helpful. It is just a fun easy trick to help patients see outcomes before it is actually provided.

Seattle Study Club As we celebrate another successful Seattle Study Club Symposium, the focus is moving forward with motivation, inspiration and advanced education in dentistry. I would like to thank the Seattle Study Clubs for inviting me to speak at the Symposium this year. In addition to speaking, I also enjoyed meeting a lot of new faces in the study club community. I am looking forward to presenting some new and exciting seminars at many of these clubs in the near future.
