Introduction to Dr. Fling's motivational book - 32 Laps

book

It is not in the knowing; it is in the doing.

It was the fall of 2010 when I was motivated to get in better shape. I had lifted weights with a buddy for many years, but I didn't do much aerobic activity. As a matter of fact, my favorite aerobic activity was eating. Not to say that I was grossly overweight or out of shape-I wasn't. But I now had the motivation to do more. I don't remember how, but I was exposed to swimming. I had never done much swimming and as I began my efforts, I felt defeated when, upon my first attempt, I was able to swim only one and a half laps. I wondered how I would ever complete the thirty-two laps that made a mile. I knew how to swim, but swimming for an entire mile, that was another story.

"Don't tell me what you are going to do; tell me what you have done." I have passed that adage along to my children on a regular basis. I started my career in my teens, when I was trained as a dental laboratory technician, and I progressed through dental school. I now practice as a restorative dentist. Early in my career, I was given the opportunity to teach at our local dental school, where even twenty-eight years later I still actively contribute some of my time and energy. As a matter of fact, my opportunity to teach other dentists and their teams has grown beyond my wildest dreams. I have been named by Dentistry Today as one of the Top 100 Clinicians in Dental Education every year since 2005. I have had the good fortune to speak to groups around the world and in the United States on technical and motivational topics. As with almost any business or service company, there are different ways to provide care and there are different levels of quality and expertise. I often teach a technique or a basic fundamental concept only to have the student or dentist say, "I already know that." When I evaluate what that person actually does, I learn that it is very different from what that person knows. I believe that one of the keys to success is bridging the gap between knowing and doing.  One of the keys to success is bridging the gap between knowing and doing.

This is especially true in dentistry, where thirty-two is a kind of magic number. Most of us have thirty-two permanent adult teeth. To a dentist, each tooth can convey a lesson of lasting value, something we gain first by being trained to know the problem we face, then by doing something about it. The thirty-two lessons each tooth gives corresponds to the thirty-two lessons in this book-lessons that teach us that the gap between knowing and doing can have lasting significance.

Seattle Study Club

The 20th Anniversary Seattle Study Club National Symposium will be held in Naples, Florida on January 21-26, 2013. Kirk Behrendt and I are looking forward to presenting the "Fusion Series" and addressing the question "What is the secret that bridges the gap between "knowing" and "doing" and motivates us to change?"

Presenters at this 20th Anniversary Symposium will emphasize the importance in asking the "right" questions of mentors and how this approach will be far more valuable in helping to gain clinically implementable answers. Along with the titles of our lectures, the presenters were asked to provide some of the most pertinent questions in contemporary dentistry-questions that must be addressed in order to move to the next level of understanding in comprehensive patient care. The answers will follow as the remarkable presentations evolve and just may change the way we practice dentistry. The goal for each listener will be to learn not only the scientific information offered, but also the skills that will guide us in better analyzing what we truly need so we can ask the questions that will yield the most valuable answers in the future.  See you there!

The 5 Website Musts for Every Business

It's a not a very well-kept secret that the world is transitioning from the usage of tangible Yellow Pages to the virtual online biosphere of digital communication. Businesses and individuals alike are learning to adapt to this progression and we are faced with a new era where nearly every person and every business has a website. As the Yellow Pages continue to become increasingly obsolete and the first place a consumer turns for information is the Internet, your challenge is no longer deciding whether you should or should not have a website (that's a no-brainer), but rather what in the world wide web do you put on it?

  1. Put some LIFE into it! With over 644 million active websites on the Internet, it's becoming even more important to make your site stand out. As more people transition from physically visiting a business to see what it's all about, to forming a one-time practically irreversible first impression via a website, it's crucial that you're able to capture them once their browser arrives on your homepage.
