Anxiety and Mindfulness:
Teaching kids how to live in the present
|
From ChildMind.org
Interview with Renee Jain. She is a life coach and founder of the programs GoStrengths! and GoZen!
"So how do we help a child who is anxious? Like grown-ups, a lot of that will be coming from worries about the future or memories of bad experiences, so bringing them into the present is still really helpful. For kids you want to make things (A) fun and (B) quick. If a kid is feeling anxious you can try a quick exercise that's fun. For example, I've used one I call the ninja walk, which is just what it sounds like. You have to walk around like a ninja for a minute, and ninjas are very quiet! So the kid is focusing on walking silently and sneaking around. It's fun and the concentration helps pull them into the present."

Daniel Radcliff (Harry Potter) Shares his Struggles with Dyspraxia
|
From Understood, an information packed website for parents of students with learning and attention challenges.
It helps when kids have an example of someone they admire who has struggled with the same challenges.
"Harry Potter is a hero to a generation of kids and their parents who are fans of the books. But actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the clever wizard in the Harry Potter movies, has also become a hero, of sorts. He's speaking out for kids with dyspraxia, a condition that makes it hard to plan and coordinate physical movement."

Managing Medication in College:
The Key is to Start Early
|
From ChildMind Institute
"The first year of college is not a good time for kids to go off medication that's been working-because they're careless or they're experimenting. Making sure your child has the knowledge and preparation to maintain her own medication regimen can mean the difference between a strong start and a hard landing."
Dr. Allison Baker, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Child Mind Institute, recommends that beginning junior year kids start learning to manage their own medication.
"When kids are comfortable and familiar with managing their own meds, including calling the pharmacy or their therapist to ask for a refill, they're much more skillful and likely to maintain good practices when they get to college."
