2016 Family Friends of Scouting Signups

Pack, Troop, and Crew committees should begin discussing Family Friends of Scouting dates.

Scheduling should be discussed with the District Executive or District FOS Chairman during the months of November and December in order to set a date during January or February 2016.

Blue & Gold banquents and Court of Honors are the best platform for a Friends of Scouting presentation. Please keep that in mind when scheduling with your District Executive or District FOS Chairman.
BeAScout.org

Be a Scouting Ambassador
Each fall, over 1,000 new families join the the Scouting programs of the Hawk Mountain Council.  They are excited by the promise of adventure, fun and family time.

As a new member in any organization, they can quickly become overwhelmed.  Many of us seasoned veterans have forgotten what's it's like to be a new member.

Sometimes, we assume that everyone knows the meaning of:  BALOO, OLS, PRAY, ASM, JASM.

Consider the following tips to help your new families have a great experience:

1-Be Friendly
2-Try not to use too many acronyms.  If you do, explain their meaning.
3-Hold an orientation for new parents
4-Explain expectations but don't make them overly difficult
5-Be Patient
6-Make a personal connection with new families
7-Have a good communication network.
8-Overall, meet their expectations of adventure, fun and family time.

There are a number of great resources on the web with more details.  A quick search of "how to welcome new scouts" will get you started.
