Announcement of Training Requirement Changes

Every youth deserves a trained leader. For years that has been a common credo among Scout leaders at all levels. We all commit significant portions of our time and talents to the Scouting program; all with the common goal of offering the best possible program to the youth who look to us for leadership.

For a number of months now, the Council Training Committee has been considering what this means and how we can insure that we are providing the trained leadership needed to continue strengthening Hawk Mountain's programs.

The Council Executive Committee and Board, have approved a phased required training policy, which will, by 2018, insure that all leaders are trained in their leadership positions. For each position, leaders will need to have completed the appropriate training (listed below) in order to renew their membership in the Hawk Mountain Council.

Membership Renewal Training Requirements: (When do you have to be trained in order to recharter?)

2016: Professional Staff, Board Members, Commissioners, District Committee Members, Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Venture Crew Advisors, Unit Committee Members, and Chartered Organization Representatives.

2017: Den Leaders, Assistant Den Leaders, and Venture Crew Assistant Advisors

2018: Assistant Scoutmasters (other than any in the Scouting Reserve Program)

The required training for each position is:

Cub Scouting:

  • There is a leader specific training for each position: Cubmaster/Assistant Cubmaster, Den Leader, Pack Committee and Pack Trainer. Complete the training for your current position.

Boy Scouting:

  • Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster - The 2 required training courses are Boy Scout Leader Specific and Introduction to Outdoor
  • Leader Skills (IOLS)
  • Committee Chairs and Members - Complete the Troop Committee Challenge Training

Venturing:

  • Advisors and Assistant Advisors - Complete Venturing Advisor Specific Training
  • Committee - Complete the Crew Committee Challenge Training

Other:

  • District Committee Members - District Committee Training Workshop
  • Chartered Organization Representatives -Training the Chartered Organization Representative or Key 4 Training
  • Commissioners - Commissioner Basic Training

The Council Training Committee is gearing up to facilitate all the required training, and we hope that you, as fellow dedicated leaders, will make every effort to complete your required training as soon as possible. We will be continuing to schedule and advertise training through Scoutwire, on the Council website, at roundtables, etc. We will distribute instruction sheets to help you take advantage of the many on-line training opportunities available or you can visit myscouting.org. You will need your membership number to complete the online training so ask your Unit committee chair or leader if you need help. In addition to our normal number of training classes, we'll be offering additional sessions of many required courses. For example, in addition to the currently scheduled IOLS course in June and August, we will be offering a fall course. Boy Scout Leader Specific will be offered several weeks at summer camp this year. On March 12, 2016, we will be hosting a University of Scouting at Albright College, at which we plan to offer all required trainings with the exception of IOLS. A training calendar is available on the council website. http://www.hmc-bsa.org/training. In addition, much of this training is exportable and can be delivered to selected groups, if you can demonstrate a need for us to come to you, and you have a sufficient number of folks requiring training in a given area. We are committed to helping your unit become 100% trained!

We hope that everyone will take the necessary steps to become a trained leader and help us provide the high quality, effective, trained leadership necessary to give our youth the maximum possible benefit of being a Scout.

Thanks for your time and your on-going commitment to our youth, as they are the future of America..

Yours in Scouting,

Hawk Mountain Council Training Committee
