Journey to Excellence

The annual Journey to Excellence (JTE) scorecard is a great way to track your unit's progress each year, as well as a powerful tool to help in planning your Scouting year. The 2015 scorecard should be used in planning your current year, and should be completed and submitted at the end of the calendar year (December 2015). The 2015 scorecard should be reviewed at your monthly committee meetings to track your current progress and set your year-end goals.

The 2014 scorecard is to be submitted now to recognize your unit's progress over the previous year and current accomplishments. If you have not already submitted your 2014 scorecard, please complete it and turn it now or with your charter (due at your March Roundtable). Order forms for 2014 JTE patches are available at the council service centers and online here (http://www.scouting.org/filestore/mission/pdf/513-192_WB.pdf).

Our newest team member

We are pleased to announce, Emily Long has accepted the position of Appalachian District Program Specialist for the Hawk Mountain Council.

Emily was born and raised in Berks County. She graduated from Governor Mifflin Senior High School in 2007 and went on to pursue her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Temple University. After taking a year off to intern for the House of Representatives in Washington, DC and to do some world travel, Emily attended the National University of Ireland in Galway, Ireland. While there, she received her Master's Degree in International Environmental Development, conducting research in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme. Upon her return to the United States, she began working in the non-profit community development sector as Director of Sales, Marketing and Funding for BIG Vision Foundation.

Now with the Hawk Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America, Emily is excited to be a part of such an honorable organization. Her passion for adventure and the outdoors will only assist her with her duties as the next Appalachian District Executive. She fully intends to help grow and develop scouting in the Muhlenberg School District and the ScoutReach programs in the City of ReadingEmily understands every youth should have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential as active members of the Boy Scouts of America.

Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation

Serving as a Staff Member at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation is a very rewarding experience and a great opportunity to develop your skills as a leader in the outdoors. There are many positions available in all of the program areas, to include Cub Program, Boy Scout Program, and more specifically Aquatics, Extreme Sports, Hawk Mountain Outfitters, and many more.

For those interested in Food Service Staff, the largest program area, staff members are eligible for an additional $150 to $250, depending on what position is held. Food Service Staff includes cooks, prep-cooks, and kitchen utilities.

So if you are looking to enter the outdoor recreation job market or just to simply gain experience, working at HMSR is a great way to gain that experience and build your resume.  Here you will serve in a rewarding position where you can be a positive force in the development of future leaders while having "fun with a purpose."

Applications are available at the council service center, Reading, the satellite service center, HMSR, and on the council website.  You may submit your completed application to Hawk Mountain Council.
