Message from Our Scout Executive

At Thanksgiving we always think of everything we are thankful for - things like friends, family, freedom, churches, schools, plenty of food, activities we can do, places we have been. It's great that we can have things that we can be thankful for. Not everyone gets everything they want, but everyone should be thankful for what they have. Thankfulness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.

Another part of Thanksgiving is the giving part. During this Thanksgiving, we are thankful for our volunteers, parents, donors and staff that give of their time and talents.  All of you make a difference in our council, our communities and most importantly, in the young men and women in our program.

Have a  wonderful Thanksgiving!

Bill Garrett | Scout Executive & CEO
2014 Scouting For Food

Thanks to everyone that participated in the 2014 Scouting For Food Drive. Hundreds of hours were spent collecting food on November 9th. 12 locations in Berks County sites were used to collect over 50,000 pounds of food for the Greater Berks Food Bank. This year's total was even with last year's collection. Scouts from Schuylkill County also collected and delivered about 10,000 pounds of food to area food pantries. Over $750 in financial contributions were collected in addition to the food. This money will allow the Food Bank to purchase over 9,000 pounds of food during the holiday season. Your efforts made a significant impact to help improve the lives of families that find themselves in difficult times.

Special thanks to this year's Chairman, Dave Prine, the National Guard for transporting food, and the staff of the Greater Berks Food Bank.

Eagle Camp 2015

Paddle the Allagash Wilderness Waterway State Park; a magnificent, 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams winding through the heart of northern Maine's vast commercial forests. Begin by paddling the narrow, trout-packed Allagash Stream, then on to Allagash Lake, where all motorized vehicles are banned, and finally the Allagash river itself. Along the way run Class I & II rapids, portage around a cascading 45 foot waterfall, and hike up nearby mountains to view distant Mount Katahdin. Eagle Camp is open exclusively to Eagle Scouts, and recipients of the Venturing Silver, Summit, and Ranger Awards.  Click here for additional information.

Eagle Camp also welcomes adult volunteers (21 and over) to serve as guides.

If you are interested in attending EAGLE CAMP as an Eagle Scout or a Venturing award recipient, contact Slate Altenburg at slayton@ptd.net, 570.386.4631, or David Muldowney at david.muldowney@scouting.org, 570.754.7552.

Order of the Arrow Unit Survey

To All Unit Leaders:

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting's national honor society. Members of the OA are drawn from local units, and one of the organizations main charges is to support local Scouting.

To learn about how to better serve your unit, our lodge is conducting a survey of all unit leaders in the council. The survey is entirely anonymous, and contains questions about how the OA serves your unit, and what we can be doing better. Completing the entire survey should take approximately five minutes.

Your feedback is valuable whether or not your unit participates in the OA program.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and give us your feedback. The lodge will use this information to improve how it serves your unit. The results are also shared with a national membership task force, which will use the results to develop new resources for both lodges and units.

The survey may be found here:

Help Us Determine the Outcome of Scouting

Thank you for taking a few minutes to participate in our annual outcomes survey. Results of these surveys will help the council determine the effectiveness of our current program, make recommendations to the national organization and secure resources from foundations that will allow us to improve our camp and overall operations.
