2014 Cub Scout Adventure Days

ALL ABOARD the Hawkwarts Express! Travel to Hawkwarts School of Scout Craft and Wizardry where the 2014 Cub Scout Adventure Days will take place on October 18 and 25, 2014 at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. These two days are filled with fun and excitement and provide Cub Scouts who may have recently joined to the seasoned Cub Scout with activities to be enjoyed in the outdoors including the bouldering wall, fishing, archery, BB gun, field sports, and a craft.

The Reservation is host to hundreds both days and volunteers are needed to deliver the promise of Scouting. Volunteers, both Adult and Boy Scout, have the opportunity to introduce many new Scouts to the program while enjoying fellowship and camaraderie.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great event, contact Debra at DSmith@krasno.com.

Commissioner Basic Training
The Commissioner is the liaison between the local council and Scouting units. The commissioner's mission is to keep units operating at maximum efficiency, maintain regular contact with unit leaders, coach leaders on where to find assistance, note weaknesses in programs, and suggest remedies. The Hawk Mountain Council will be offering Commissioner Basic Training on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the S.T.E.M. building at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.  Please register by clicking here.
 Unit Fiscal Operations - Fundraising
Welcome to Part 3 of a series on unit fiscal operations.

The Hawk Mountain Council sponsors one fundraiser each year that is pre-approved for all Scouting units - the annual Camp Masters Popcorn sale.

This is the only fundraiser that units may participate in that do not require a Unit Money-Earning Application.  It is also the only fundraiser in which Scouts can where their official field uniform.  Scouts are not permitted to wear the Boy Scouts of America uniform even when other unit fundraisers are approved by the local council.

ALL other unit fundraisers require two weeks advanced written approval.  Please note that requests are not automatically approved.  Properly completed  Unit Money-Earning Applications are reviewed by the local council and then the appropriate leaders are notified with the decision. Unit fundraisers that do not receive approval are not covered by the Boy Scouts of America's national liability insurance program.

Units are not allowed to directly solicit contributions or in-kind donations. Doing so may put the donor ask risk of being in violation of federal and state laws.

Finally, please follow these guidelines with your approved fundraisers:

  • Do not gamble or conflict with local ordinances.
  • Ensure your project provides a value worthy of the money spent on the project.
  • Respect the territorial rights of other units.
  • Do not conflict with goods or services offered by established merchants or workmen. Do not schedule a project that conflicts with established dates of money-earning in the chartered organization, council, or community.
  • Protect the name and goodwill of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Do not enter a contract that may bind the BSA, either locally or nationally.
  • Consider money-earning projects that serve a dual purpose of conservation and money earning. Collection of aluminum, glass, paper, and scrap metal can be profitable when conducted near a recycling facility. Units should be sure of a market before any collection. A collection must be well planned with adequate adult supervision and safety precautions.

New Cub Scout Program 2015-2016

As part of the Boy Scouts of America's 2011-2015 National Strategic Plan, a group of Volunteers and Professional Scouters from across the nation have undertaken a comprehensive review of Scouting's three main programs; Venturing, Boy Scouting, and Cub Scouting to make sure that these programs are "appealing, exciting, and culturally relevant to today's youth and families." As a result, the task force made recommendations and is in the process of updating and overhauling Scouting's Programs.

Program updates, new handbooks, and other resources will be released beginning in 2014 with the Venturing Program. Cub Scouting updates will come in 2015. Boy Scouting updates will come in 2016. For a timeline and summary of upcoming changes for each program, take a look at the one page overviews linked below:

 2014 Venturing Program Updates

 2015 Cub Scout Program Updates

 2016 Boy Scout Program Updates

For a detailed discussion of the why and how of these changes were made; go to http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/programupdates.aspx. This site contains current program updates and information that has been released about the changes.

One of the big changes taking place was announced several months ago; the switch to "One Scout Oath & One Scout Law" for all Scouting Programs. Although some units have already decided to make the switch on their own, the switch does not officially happen for each program until the new program handbooks are released: late 2014 for Venturing and 2015 for Cub Scouting. Boy Scouting will see no change. Versions of the current program handbooks reflecting a switch to the One Scout Oath & One Scout Law are not currently available from BSA National Supply.
