Be a Scouting Ambassador & Welcome New Members
Over the next few months, we will welcome over 1,000 new youth members and their families to the Hawk Mountain Council.

With any organization, new members can feel overwhelmed and intimidated -  Scouting is no different.  New members must learn about the uniform, the language, our camps, our office, their unit and our program.  To assist new members, we have designed a new section of our webpage titled "I am New to Scouting."  Please take a moment to click on the link below and share it with your new members.

In addition to sharing the information on our website, consider "adopting" a new Scouting family until they feel comfortable.  You may make a huge difference in their experience.
2014 Cub Scout Adventure Days

ALL ABOARD the Hawkwarts Express! Travel to Hawkwarts School of Scout Craft and Wizardry where the 2014 Cub Scout Adventure Days will take place on October 18 and 25, 2014 at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. These two days are filled with fun and excitement and provide Cub Scouts who may have recently joined to the seasoned Cub Scout with activities to be enjoyed in the outdoors including the bouldering wall, fishing, archery, BB gun, field sports, and a craft.

The Reservation is host to hundreds both days and volunteers are needed to deliver the promise of Scouting. Volunteers, both Adult and Boy Scout, have the opportunity to introduce many new Scouts to the program while enjoying fellowship and camaraderie.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great event, contact Debra at DSmith@krasno.com.

 Unit Fiscal Operations - Taxes
Welcome to Part 2 of a series on unit fiscal operations.

In the last edition of ScoutWire, we discussed the need for Scout units to obtain a tax ID number and how to apply.  One of the top questions we receive when discussing tax ID numbers with units leaders is
"Will we have to pay taxes?"

A:  The BSA national office consulted with the IRS and outside counsel about whether this filing requirement applies to Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews, and other units. In their opinion, most Scout units do not have to file Form 990-N. For most units, no filing is required.

The only exception is for the very small number of units that have filed for separate, federal tax exempt status under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Those units must file either Form 990-N (if their annual gross receipts were $50,000 or less) or the more detailed Form 990 or 990EZ (if annual gross receipts were more than $50,000).

We will discuss the unit money earning application in the next edition.

Memorials and Tributes

The Hawk Mountain Council has a Memorial/Tribute Fund established for its Scouters and supporters to make living and lasting tax deductible contributions to the Scouting program.

Contributions may be made for any amount as a living memorial or lasting tribute to a departed relative or in honor of someone. Condolences, recognition or congratulations may be expressed through the use of the Memorial/Tribute Fund, when material gifts or remembrances may not be desirable or appropriate.

Upon receipt of a contribution, the Council will mail a nice card to the family or group in whose memory or honor the gift is made and send an acknowledgement to you.

To make a memorial or tribute contribution, please download the form by clicking here.
