The Summit High Adventure Trek 2015
The Hawk Mountain Council is proud to announce a planned trek to the Summit Bechtel Reserve in 2015.  We are looking for a minimum of 7 Scouts and two leaders (there is no maximum) to be the first from the Hawk Mountain Council to experience the Summit's High Adventure Program.  Here are some details that we know now:
  • The Summit Experience is a seven-day/six night program running Sunday to Saturday. It consists of half-day introductory level experiences at each of the nine Summit high adventure venues.
  • Each group will perform a half-day service project and have the chance to ride The Big Zip - the three-quarter mile zip line.
  • Each night (Monday-Friday), participants will enjoy activities at the Scott Summit Center.
  • The cost of attendance is $759 PLUS travel and other items such as trek shirts or patches.  The final cost will be decided by the participants once they make final plans.
  • The Summit will provide tents, cots and all program equipment. Breakfast and dinner will be served in the Summit dining hall. Shelf-stable lunches will be issued to accompany participants to their daily program venues.
  • The Summit Experience is open to registered Scouts and Venturers who are at least 13 years old by September 1 of the year they attend.
  • We would like to plan the Trek for the August 5 though August 12, 2015 session.
If you are interested, please email Bill Garrett, Scout Executive by clicking here.  Please include "2015 Summit Trek" in the subject line of your email.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation 2014

It was a fantastic summer at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation!  As you know summer camp is more than a fun-filled adventure in the great outdoors, it is an experience that instills leadership, teamwork, self-confidence, physical fitness and character!

At HMSR, Scouts are removed from the hustle and bustle world of mass information, media, and technology. Our "protected environment" provides a significant opportunity for growth among young men and women. Time seems to take on a different meaning when the day is not filled with television, radio, video games, and visits to malls. This is the starting place for change.

At camp, Scouts have time to consider and reflect on their place in life. Strong personal values and character are shaped as young boys are encouraged to take a part in decisions that impact others, contemplate their relationship with God, reflect on personal values, and participate in patriotic activities regarding American citizenship.

Here is a snapshot of the 2014 summer season:

  • Over 2,500 young men and women (Boy Scouts and Venturers) attended HMSR over 7 weeks
  • 450 Cub Scouts participated in day camp
  • HMSR hosted over 300 Bible Boot Camp participants from Christ Evangelical Free Church in Bethel
  • 6 of our 167 season staff members were international Scouts
  • About 12,500 merit badges were earned
  • 86% of Scouts said they tried something new at camp
  • 94% of Scouts reported they made new friends

International Camp Staff
This year's summer camping season saw six international Scouts on Reservation staff.   There was Anis from Tunisia, Penelope from the Dominican Republic, Evelu from Peru, Lynn from Taiwan, Chris from the U.K., and Omar from Egypt. Scouting is a world-wide movement and to be able to speak with Scouters from all over the world truly benefitted the Reservation and the campers who enjoyed their stories from faraway places

2014 Summer Camping Season Comes to a Close - With the closing of WEBELOS Extended, Session II, the 2014 summer camping season comes to an end. Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation was host to thousands of Scouts and Scouters from all over the world to include New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Hawaii, Egypt, and Taiwan, just to name a few places. From the addition of paddle boards and atlatls for Camp Meade to Hawkwarts School of Scoutcraft and Wizardry at Camp DuPortail, fun was had by both Scout and Scouter. A big thank you goes out to everyone that made this summer camping season a great success. See you  next year.

Until Next Year!  It was a long but good summer full of laughter, joy and maybe a mosquito bite or two. If you are already getting excited about summer camp 2015, please contact Kathryn at 570-754-7552 or kathryn.tylka@scouting.org to reserve your campsite. May you have blue skies and happy trails.

The Fun Doesn't Have to End!  Want the summer camping season all year round?  We may not have the summer weather but the fun doesn't have to stop!  Learn how your unit can keep the fun going during fall and winter weekend camping by contacting Kathryn at 570-754-7552 or kathryn.tylka@scouting.org.

NYLT Class of 2014

The week of August 10 brought twenty eight Boy Scout or Venture Crew participants together for an adventure on Hawk Mountain's own Brownsea Island for this year's National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course. Participants learned about proper teaching and leading methods and good communication. Problem solving and team building were challenges they needed to overcome. They learned how to handle conflict resolution, diversity, ethical decision making and how to be a good leader among many other skills. All of this in a weeks' worth of games, challenges and FUN!  In the end everyone bonded as patrols, saw their visions and found their Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. They all earned their NYLT cubes, similar to the Wood Badge Beads, and took their new found knowledge back to their home units where they can help their Troops and Crews improve and be better leaders and mentors. If you/your youth missed out on this year's fun and training, be sure to sign up for next year's course. Plans are already underway and dates will be out soon.

Spotlight on Troop 621 Orwigsburg, PA
    - During a vacation trip to Japan, Alex Miller, Tom W Piaskowski, Ronny Piaskowski, and Tom E Piaskowski stopped by the Tokyo Scout office.  While there, they met the office Program Director, the Museum Director, and a Cambodian Scout Troop which was preparing for a multi-cultural activity.  They had time to visit the Trading Post, talk with the office directors and trading post personnel, and take a quick tour of the museum.  The Tokyo office administers a large outdoor base near Mt. Fuji and is currently focused on arranging the 2015 International Jamboree.    A Hawk Mountain Council CSP and Black Rock District patch were donated to the museum director to be part of a large display he is working on.  While in Japan, the travelers enjoyed visiting various sights in Tokyo, touring a castle in Matsumoto, and climbing Mt. Fuji.   Alex and the Piaskowski's are members of Troop 621 Orwigsburg.
