| 2014 Popcorn Sale | Are you ready to have a successful popcorn sale? Have you prepared your popcorn sales plan and submitted it to the council office? Have you submitted your Show and Sell Order? Are you planning a fun filled kick off? Your order and sales plans are due by Wednesday, August 13. Here are some ideas for a successful sale. For a great sale, use all four selling options! Take order - Largest part of your sales. So easy - encourage each Scout to visit nearby neighbors and call friends and relatives. With a small amount of effort, they will sell more than they thought they would. Show and Sell - Think outside the box! You don't need a Wal-Mart or WaWa......find a festival, carnival or some other event and do a show and sell there. Limit the number of Scouts per event - too many can be just as bad as too little. Online Sales - Even if you only have a few sales online selling will increase the unit and Scout's bottom line. Take and Sell - Door to Door with products - This is door to door with product in hand. You will need 2 adults (and 2 cars if doing rural area), lots of product and Scouts in class A's with happy smiling faces! Troop 575 tried this at the end of the 2013 sale just to see how it would work (especially in a rural setting)...........and they sold way more in 2 ½ hours than was sold in the same time period at Wal-Mart! Download popcorn forms on our website at http://www.hmc-bsa.org/Popcorn/Resources/PopcornForms If you have any questions contact your district popcorn kernel or Sally Trump at sally.trump@scouting.org or 484-824-5404. |

FIRST ANNUAL WINTER BREAK S.T.E.M. UNIVERSITY
| |
Save the date... December 27, 2014. After the excitement of the holiday rush is over, young people are looking to get out of the house for the next adventure. Plan on attending the First Annual Winter Break Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) University organized by the Hawk Mountain Council.
STEM disciplines are considered by many to be the foundation for academic and professional fields of an advanced society. In many forums - including political/governmental and academic - the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation's ability to sustain itself.
At the very core of our mission, in the Hawk Mountain Council, we are working hard to align ourselves with local education and other programs to help enrich the lives of Scouts. Did you know that the STEM program has existed in the Boy Scouts of America since the very beginning of our program? Some of the very first merit badges were STEM related; they just were not referred to that way. A great example is the Computer merit badge which has been offered since 1968, much earlier than computers were adopted in the mainstream. We have continued to be cutting edge including the recent release of the Robotics merit badge.
STEM recognition in the BSA comes in the form of the NOVA award and the prestigious SUPERNOVA award. These awards are presented to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers who display knowledge and understanding of STEM concepts through the completion of project requirements. Please click here for more information on the awards programs.
If you would like to be on the founder's committee of this event, please email Joshua Potts at Joshua.potts@scouting.org or call 610-926-3406.

BSA Change in Unit Registration Status
|
Effective January 1, 2015: A unit that has not re-registered by its expiration date, will be considered separated and immediately dropped from BSA's membership reporting. This is a change from the current lapsed period where a unit's membership continues to be counted for 60 days in council membership totals. Note:
- The new definition will begin with units that have an effective date of January 1, 2015. This means that units with a December 31, 2014 expiration date will be included.
- Volunteers will retain access to MyScouting, MyScouting tools, Internet Rechartering and Internet Advancement for 30 days after their unit has become expired and become separated.
- A separated unit has 12 months to re-register as a separated-re-registered unit.
- Once a separated unit has been re-registered in National's Scouting system, the unit will be included on membership reports starting in the business month the recharter was posted.
For additional information or questions, please contact Brian Beddow at brian.beddow@scouting.org or 610-926-3406.
