2014 National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)

Leadership is a key factor in the development of a Boy Scout/Venturer.  One of the most valuable things Scouting offers is the opportunity to be a leader and to develop his or her leadership skills.  The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course provides an exceptional opportunity for the youth to do just that.

NYLT is an intensive six day training experience for Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol leaders, Patrol leaders and other youth leaders as well as prospective troop leaders and venture crew leadership. The course uses a systematic approach to teach contemporary leadership skills, with an emphasis on both theory and practical application in a Scouting context.  For the Scout who desires to be a better and more effective leader NYLT is an unparalleled opportunity.

The Hawk Mountain Council is offering NYLT August 10-15, 2014 at the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.  Additional information may be found here and on our website .

2014 Trail to Eagle (TTE) Camp

Trail to Eagle is for Scouts with the sincere desire to become the ultimate rank in Scouting, "EAGLE." The Trail to Eagle Team of Hawk Mountain Council is offering their assistance to obtain some of your merit badges with the "Trail to Eagle" program being offered at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.

We will be offering five Eagle required merit badges and one additional merit badge.  The merit badges offered are Citizenship in the World, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the Community, Personal Management, Family Life, and Public Speaking.  The TTE program will run from July 27, 2014 to August 1, 2014 (week 6).  This program is available to any Scout who has achieved the rank of first class and is the age of 13 by the start of the program.

Applications for the program are available at the Hawk Mountain Council, Beaver Family Service Center and on our website.  The fee for the program this year will be $340.00.  The program can only accept 36 scouts and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Any questions please feel free to call Rudy Benkert, TTE course director, at 570.739.2752.
Fall Membership Recruiting is Just Around the Corner

Mark your calendars to attend one of three Cub Scout Fall recruiting workshops. On August 21, August 26, or September 3 you can learn about new district recruiting tools that will be used during a NEW recruiting initiative and how to run a successful sign-up night. District Executives will have portable pinewood derby tracks, raingutter regatta tracks, and other games that can be used during your sign-up night. Come to a recruiting workshop to see how you can bring the excitement to your pack.

New Boy Scout and Cub Scout Yard Signs are available, contact your District Executive.

2014 Popcorn Sale

Has your unit completed their 2014 Popcorn Commitment Form?  Have you signed up for the Council Popcorn Kick-off on July 30 at 6:00 PM at FirstEnergy Stadium?  Have you planned your unit's kick-off?  What should you do at your unit kick-off?

A unit kick-off is important!  It doesn't matter whether it's big or small, a separate event, or part of a regular Troop or Pack meeting.  Have a kick-off to bring special attention to the annual popcorn sale. Invite parents and siblings and make it a fun special time so that you have everyone's attention.  At this time you can:

  • Explain the products.
  • Explain all the prize incentives- inspire and motivate your Scouts so they see the really great prizes they can earn.
  • Explain all the monetary incentives - inspire and motivate your parents so they see how selling popcorn can help them entirely fund their child's Scouting experience for an entire year.
  • Explain that there is not as much resistance to price because people want to support Scouting.  (On a per unit basis, popcorn is more affordable than most other fundraisers done for schools, sports, etc...and more profit (70%) is returned back to the unit and council then in most other fundraisers.)

Remember we are not selling popcorn we are selling Scouting!

Path of the Warrior

The Path of the Warrior - Coming to Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation on July 26, 2014 - Volunteers needed

The Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail is about a return to the child-like sense of adventure that many may have lost because of everyday routines.  The Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail wants to keep this sense of adventure alive in our youth BEFORE they lose it. This is a day filled with fun and adventure as our Cub Scouts embark on an obstacle course. With their adult partner, the boys can also go to the lake for fishing, the bb gun and archery ranges, and try tomahawk throwing.

The committee for the Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail needs your help to make this possible. If interested in assisting with this adventure day, we would love to have you on the volunteer staff. In return for volunteering, you will receive a Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail T-shirt and the satisfaction of being a part of this adventure day in its infancy. You may also contribute to the all day pot-luck picnic for staff and partake in the enjoyment of new friends and fellowship.

Please contact Tim Barrett at 610-367-5091 to volunteer or click here for additional information.
Boating and Water Safety Awareness Course

It is recommended that participants know how to swim as basic boating skills and other water activities will be covered. Life jackets will be worn during all water activities. Bring a packed lunch, a swimsuit, towel, and water shoes.  Registration is free and is required by July 11.  Please call 610-376-6337 for more information or to reserve your spot today.

FIRST ANNUAL WINTER BREAK S.T.E.M. UNIVERSITY

Save the date... December 27, 2014.  After the excitement of the holiday rush is over, young people are looking to get out of the house for the next adventure.  Plan on attending the First Annual Winter Break Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) University organized by the Hawk Mountain Council.

STEM disciplines are considered by many to be the foundation for academic and professional fields of an advanced society.  In many forums - including political/governmental and academic - the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation's ability to sustain itself.

At the very core of our mission, in the Hawk Mountain Council, we are working hard to align ourselves with local education and other programs to help enrich the lives of Scouts.  Did you know that the STEM program has existed in the Boy Scouts of America since the very beginning of our program?  Some of the very first merit badges were STEM related; they just were not referred to that way.  A great example is the Computer merit badge which has been offered since 1968, much earlier than computers were adopted in the mainstream.  We have continued to be cutting edge including the recent release of the Robotics merit badge.

STEM recognition in the BSA comes in the form of the NOVA award and the prestigious SUPERNOVA award. These awards are presented to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers who display knowledge and understanding of STEM concepts through the completion of project requirements.  Please click here for more information on the awards programs.

If you would like to be on the founder's committee of this event, please email Joshua Potts at Joshua.potts@scouting.org or call 610-926-3406.
