Welcome to our "TEAM"
| |
Please join us in welcoming two new members of the Hawk Mountain Council TEAM.
Joshua Potts has accepted the position of Assistant Development Director. He is bringing youth and professional experience to the Council. As a youth he earned Eagle Scout and after college served as a District Executive in the York-Adams Area Council, now known as the New Birth of Freedom Council.
Joshua enjoys spending time with his wife Rebecca, 2 1/2 year old daughter Cordelia, and two coon-hounds. Joshua is also an avid hunter and long distance runner who enjoys coaching Oley's Middle School cross country team in the fall. His two greatest accomplishments so far in life are his family and recently completing his first ultra-marathon.
Joshua is looking forward to meeting and working with all of the volunteers who devote their time, talents, and efforts within the Hawk Mountain Council.
We are also pleased to announce, Kathryn Tylka has accepted the position of Program Specialist. Kathryn will be providing program, administrative, and retail support at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation and Hawk Mountain Council.
Kathryn is no stranger to Scouting. She is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts, where as a youth, she earned the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award (awards equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award). She also spent 6 summers employed at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation in both Camp Duportail and Camp Meade.
Kathryn graduated in 2012 from Lock Haven University with a bachelors degree in Social Work. Since graduating, she has been involved with mentoring and counseling youth in Berks County. She has a passion for the Scouting movement and is extremely excited to work with the volunteers and employees of the council.
Kathryn is married to Richard Tylka and enjoys the great outdoors.

Schuylkill United Way Day of Caring
| The Schuylkill United Way held its annual Day of Caring on May 2, 2014. The Day of Caring is a day set aside for Schuylkill County organizations to do a day of service in their communities. This year, Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation hosted volunteers from Wal-Mart, Susquehanna Bank, and Gordon Food Service. The volunteers spent time preparing campsites, building picnic tables, and building tent platforms. Lunch was provided by Gordon Food Service and served up by the 2015 Schuylkill United Way Campaign Chairperson Anthony Harbison. Pictured above, Bill Garrett, Scout Executive, thanks the volunteers and provides them information on Scouting in the community. On behalf of the thousands of Scouts who visit the Reservation throughout the year, thank you to the volunteers who supported the 2014 Day of Caring. |

2014 National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)
|
Leadership is a key factor in the development of a Boy Scout/Venturer. One of the most valuable things Scouting offers is the opportunity to be a leader and to develop his or her leadership skills. The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course provides an exceptional opportunity for the youth to do just that.
NYLT is an intensive six day training experience for Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol leaders, Patrol leaders and other youth leaders as well as prospective troop leaders and venture crew leadership. The course uses a systematic approach to teach
contemporary leadership skills, with an emphasis on both theory and practical application in a Scouting context. For the Scout who desires to be a better and more effective leader NYLT is an unparalleled opportunity.
The Hawk Mountain Council is offering NYLT August 10-15, 2014 at the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. Additional information may be found here and on our website.

Path of the Warrior
| |
The Path of the Warrior - Coming to Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation on July 26, 2014 - Volunteers needed
The Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail is about a return to the child-like sense of adventure that many may have lost because of everyday routines. The Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail wants to keep this sense of adventure alive in our youth BEFORE they lose it. This is a day filled with fun and adventure as our Cub Scouts embark on an obstacle course. With their adult partner, the boys can also go to the lake for fishing, the bb gun and archery ranges, and try tomahawk throwing.
The committee for the Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail needs your help to make this possible. If interested in assisting with this adventure day, we would love to have you on the volunteer staff. In return for volunteering, you will receive a Lenni Lenape Warrior Trail T-shirt and the satisfaction of being a part of this adventure day in its infancy. You may also contribute to the all day pot-luck picnic for staff and partake in the enjoyment of new friends and fellowship.
Please contact Tim Barrett at 610-367-5091 to volunteer or click here for additional information.

2014 Popcorn Sale
|
The 2014 popcorn sale may seem a long way off, but it is never too early to start planning for a successful popcorn sale.
What should you be doing right now to ensure a successful, profitable sale?
1. Identify a popcorn chairman for your unit and a popcorn representative from each den (other than the den leader). These parents will help with all of the popcorn activities and help to drive communications at the den level on a weekly basis.
2. Hold an information meeting with the popcorn reps to present timing and items to be addressed in the fall.
Based on your suggestions the 24 pack Variety Microwave Popcorn and the 24 pack Movie Theater Extra Butter Microwave Popcorn will be available for "Show and Sell". We will also have a Cinnamon Crunch Tin available for Show and Sell only.
Put these key dates on your calendar:
May 18, 4:00 PM, Schuylkill Valley Middle School, Michael Beck Seminar. Your unit will earn an additional 2% commission for attending this seminar.
July 30, 6:00 PM, First Energy Stadium, Popcorn Kick-off.
We want to share the "best practices" from successful popcorn sales with you in future Scoutwires. Please complete the a short survey to help us gather this information. Your opinions are important to us.
