Greetings from Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation

Reservation staff has already begun preparations for the 2014 camping season.  Construction has begun on the final addition of the Reary Shower House expansion.  This summer you will find single-entry bathrooms and showers as well as a reconfigured female camper shower area.  And thanks to Wood Badge Course N6-528-13, campers will be able to sit at the improved fire circle and enjoy the view of Lake Nalaheman.

For more information on summer camp opportunities, be sure to go to http://www.hmc-bsa.org/camping.

Summer Employment Opportunities
Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation summer staff positions for 2014 are still available.  Whether you are interested in working the Cub Scout Program, Boy Scout/Venturing Program, or Support Services (Ranger duties, food service, administration), be sure to submit your application.

A new position has been added to the Reservation staff is Photographer/Media Director.  This staff member is responsible for unit photos as well as program photography throughout the week; also included is the production of the weekly DVD.

For those interested in Food Service Staff, the largest program area, staff members are eligible for an additional $150 to $250, depending on what position held.  Food Service Staff includes cooks, prep-cooks, kitchen utilities, and heater stack drivers (delivering meals to campsites).

So if you are looking to enter the outdoor recreation job market or just to simply gain experience, working at HMSR is a great way to gain experience and build your resume.  Here you will serve in a rewarding position where you can be a positive force in the development of future leaders while having "fun with a purpose."

Applications are available at the Council Service Center, Reading, the Satellite Service Center, HMSR, and on the council website.  You may submit your completed application to Hawk Mountain Council.

Feel free to contact David Muldowney at 570.754.7552 or email at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Annual Health and Medical Record

In preparation for the summer camp season, a new, simplified annual health and medical record was released from the National Office effective March 1, 2014.

Some of the key updates are:

  • The primary version will be English. The existing bilingual version will remain available.
  • Part A (Informed Consent, Release Agreement, and Authorization) will contain no medical information and will be shorter by one page.
  • Part B (General Information/Health History) will include only the most important information needed.
  • Part C (Pre-Participation Physical) will be reduced to one page with expanded sections for allergy explanation.
  • Supplemental Risk Advisory (former Part D) will be shortened and be location specific.  This is designed to take to physicians so they will better understand what activities their patients will participate in.
  • A redesign of the landing page for the annual health and medical record website so participants and parents will be able to download only what they need.
We need your help in eliminating all reference to any prior versions of the record. Please host only this link:  http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx. Don't print out the record unless absolutely necessary. If you have previously hosted parts of the annual health and medical record, delete the PDFs, don't just hide the link
2014 Trail to Eagle (TTE) Camp
This year, once again, for Scouts with the sincere desire to become the ultimate rank in Scouting, "EAGLE," the Trail to Eagle Team of Hawk Mountain Council is offering their assistance to obtain some of your merit badges with the "Trail to Eagle" program being offered at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.

This program is available to any Scout who has achieved the rank of First Class and is the age of 14 by the start of the program.  We will be offering five Eagle required merit badges and one additional merit badge.  The merit badges offered are Citizenship in the World, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the Community, Personal Management, Family Life, and Public Speaking.  The TTE program will run from July 27, 2014 to August 1, 2014 (week 6).  Applicants must attend a meeting April 12, 2014 to learn how the camp will function and cover the prerequisites that will be required to complete the merit badges prior to attending.

Applications for the program are available at the Hawk Mountain Council, Beaver Family Service Center and on our website.  The fee for the program this year will be $340.00.  The program can only accept 36 scouts and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Any questions please feel free to call Rudy Benkert, TTE course director, at 570.739.2752.

Commissioner Basic Training

null Commissioners are district and council volunteer leaders who help units succeed.  They coach and consult with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing adult leaders.  They help maintain the standards of the Boy Scouts of America.  They oversee the unit charter renewal plan so that each unit registers on time, and with the optimum number of youth and adult members.

This training is for "New" Unit Commissioners and Unit Commissioners who have not completed Basic Training.  The next Commissioner Basic Training is Sunday, March 23, 2014.

Registration is available online at hmc-bsa.org.  Reservation forms are also available at our Council Service Center and at HMSR Satellite Service Center.

The Trainer's Edge Training Course

The purpose of the Trainer's EDGE course is to provide and help develop the platform skills of a trainer. This course is intended to "train the trainer" on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media. You will have the opportunity to be in front of the group. The group will offer feedback that will help you improve your skills as a trainer. Feedback is a gift. We want to make sure it is given in a positive, helpful way. Sign-up for our May 31, 2014 course TODAY!

Leave No Trace Trainer Course
This trainer course will be held March 28-30, 2014 at the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation and is a vital component of the Leave No Trace program. District Operations

Over the course of the next several months, the Key Three members in Appalachian, Frontier, and Cacoosing will be working to implement changes that will allow us to better serve our existing units as well as to grow the Scouting programs in under-served areas.

These changes include:  The hiring of Fran Rodriquez as the new Appalachian District, Program Specialist. She will serve the Muhlenberg and Reading school districts. Units in the Fleetwood and Kutztown school districts will move to the Frontier District, Units in Hamburg and Schuylkill Valley school districts will move to the Cacoosing District. Units are asked to consider becoming a mentor to units in our urban areas or units just getting started.

The district Key Three volunteers are hard at work putting a formal transition plan together.  For now, please know that our current staff and district committees are operating as usual.
