Membership Fee Increase
|
Fellow Scouters,
Over the past three days, I have been attending our annual Top Hands Meeting in Washington, DC.
Among the items announced, our National Executive Board approved a membership fee increase from $15.00 to $24.00 beginning January 1, 2014.
It is important to note that membership fees are set by the national organization. Although they are collected by our Hawk Mountain Council, these fees are immediately transmitted to the national organization and are not used to directly fund our council operations. The fees are, however used to fund such things as:
- Internet Rechartering
- My Scouting Tools
- Internet Advancement
- Internet Training
The following information was shared during the announcement:
- The Boy Scouts of America maintains a strong financial position. In order to continue to deliver the nation's foremost youth program, it is occasionally necessary to increase membership fees so that we can offset rising costs. For this reason, the Boy Scouts of America is increasing its membership fee from $15 to $24 per year for all registered Scouts and adults effective January 1, 2014. For those who join after the beginning of the year, the fee will be prorated at $2 per month. This does include units with a December 31, 2013, expiration date.
- The Boy Scouts of America last increased fees in 2010. Since that time, the National Organization has taken additional steps to control and reduce costs, but costs have continued to rise faster than projected. The National Executive Committee began discussions about increasing membership fees in 2012.
I understand that increases in prices are not always welcome. However, I firmly believe that even at $24.00 ($2.00 per month) Scouting is a great value!
Finally, I will ask that you join me in making sure that continue to focus on serving as many young men and women as we can with the best programs possible.
Yours in Scouting,
Bill Garrett Scout Executive & CEO Hawk Mountain Council
