A large portion of distraction reaches us through our five sense organs, most notably the senses of sound and sight. One of the reasons our senses are so powerful is that they can trigger memories very easily.

It is helpful to allow the eyes to perceive a situation based on the premise that there is always, yes always, more to a situation than the senses can perceive. When we understand that the senses are not full proof, we realize that the senses are "fool-proof," then we react slowly to gather more information about a situation. 

Meditation helps one realize that even

The sense of taste, touch and smell are lesser distractions during seated meditation practice. While aromas associate the mind with strong memories, these situations are less frequent when meditating. Likewise, the hands and skin is passive during meditation practice.
