QUOTE

By breaking down our sense of self-importance, all we lose is a parasite that has long infected our minds.

What we gain in return is freedom, openness of mind, spontaneity, simplicity, altruism: all qualities inherent in happiness.

Dear

It is said that the soul is contained in the human voice, yet social confines often direct us to keep quiet (our opinions, crying, singing, humming, shouting).

As a Kindergarten teacher, I sing, hum, echo, play sound and word games, and have the most incredible conversations. I also have the privilege of listening to children's voices in their exchanges, calls, shouts, laughter and various sounds that they emit so naturally. Their vibrations of sound are surely as healing and empowering for them as they are for me the listener.

As a Nia teacher, I also explore my sound possibilities and encourage others to do the same. When we sigh to accompany a stretch, we ground ourselves. When we emit a "ha" to accompany a kick, we stabilize, balance, and release energy.

We feel the physical strengthening and sense of assertiveness that comes with a strong exhale and a "sha" or "ho" or "no" sound when we punch or block. We share the delight that comes with spontaneous singing, chanting or other sounds when we laugh, cheer or "whoop it up" while at Nia play, and the peace that a simple "mmm" or "aah" can bring as we wind down.

I am thankful for opportunities to express and release and I know that they are part of my formula for well-being. I am curious about the upcoming YogaVoice retreat

and eager to experience Mark Moliterno's approach to sound healing practices in the context of yoga and life.

I invite you to join in the exploration for your self.

Namaste,

Darlene
