Register for the NACD 2014 Soil Health Forum & Tour in Indianapolis, July 21-22


The deadline for registration for the NACD 2014 Soil Health Forum & Tour is quickly approaching - sign up by July 11 to take advantage of the advance registration rate! 

The 2014 NACD Soil Health Forum & Tour will take place in Indianapolis this month.

According to Jeff Meinders, President of IASWCD, "The NACD Soil Health Forum and Conservation Tour will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the soil health outreach efforts happening in Indiana and across the nation."

Volunteer for Pathway to Water Quality!


There are still many opportunities to volunteer with Pathway to Water Quality during the 2014 Indiana

State Fair. This premiere soil and water conservation exhibit plays an important role in exposing fair-goers to conservation practices they can implement at home, and practices used on the farm to maintain and increase soil health and water quality. 

We can't do it alone! Please take a few minutes to read about the different volunteer positions, then sign up for a shift. All volunteers receive a free admission ticket to the State Fair (2 tickets if you volunteer for a weekend position).

Request for Rain Garden Workshop Partners

The week of September 15, Rusty Schmidt (Author of The Blue Thumb Guide to Rain Gardens) will lead several rain garden workshops in Indiana. Two or three locations are being sought for beginner or intermediate level workshops. The sessions can be geared towards homeowners, landscape professionals, landscape architects, landscape designers, engineers or a combination of these groups.


Potential partners include agencies of the ICP, watershed groups, etc. Partners should be willing to work with other

ICP, local, and regional agencies on shared costs, logistics, and marketing. The fee is $600 per workshop, which can be covered through participant registration fees or sponsorships. Rusty's travel fees, lodging, and meals would be covered by SSCB grant funds and the ICP Training and Certification Program.


If your group is interested, please submit a letter of interest/commitment with a brief description of your intent (one document total) by July 9 at 12 pm EST to Laura Fribley ([email protected]). Final selections will be notified shortly thereafter. Please include which dates your group is/is not available the week of September 15.


Manure Management Field Day on July 29


The Wabash County SWCD and CCSI will host a free Manure Management Field Day on July 29 at Brubaker Farms in North Manchester. 


The program will address application technology and

nutrient management as well as the ways in which manure management relates to conservation and soil health. Topics of the day include:

  • Nutrient Management of Liquid and Dry Manure
  • Variable Rate Liquid Manure Application Technology
  • Working Manure into Your No-Till System to Improve Soil Health
  • The Effects of Manure on Water Quality

Additionally, a variety of application equipment will be on display and running demonstrations. 


The program is from 8:30 am - 12 pm EST with check-in beginning at 8 am. The event is free to attend, but registration is requested by July 22 to ensure adequate seating and refreshments.

Reminder: District Showcase Applications Due July 11

Indiana's District Showcase Award is designed to highlight the success of four local Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the Hoosier state. The award focus allows Districts the opportunity to share new project ideas or better ways to design and implement existing conservation projects.

Purdue Offers Free  Lake & River Enhancement Seminar on July 9
This webinar will be an overview of the various components of the Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) Program of the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Indiana Department of Natural Resources presented by Gregory L.
Learn about Lake & River Enhancement in this free webinar.
Biberdorf, LARE Program Manager.  It will include information about sediment removal, logjam removal, watershed land treatment, biological, construction, engineering, and invasive aquatic vegetation management projects that are funded through LARE Cost-share grants. Discussion on the application process and requirements as well as the timeline of project grants will be touched upon. Photos of example projects will be included and an opportunity for questions from interested participants or potential project sponsors.
