10 Ways Associations Are Harnessing the Web

In July we were asked to write a guest blog for US-based management consulting firm, XZY University, on the top 10 ways associations harness the web.

MemberWise has worked in collaboration with Founder and US Association thought-leader and author, Sarah Sladek, on a number of initiatives over the past couple of years including a practitioner
 review of popular publication:

'The End of Membership As We Know It'
-

A MUST read if you are evaluating generational change/impact on member retention and recruitment.

The above publication inspired our free member benefit generational evaluation tool that is regularly used by many UK-based membership organisations and associations to quality assure the provision of member benefits/value.

Our Guest Blog focuses on the top ten ways EU membership organisations and associations are harnessing the web to drive member value and growth. Content is derived from our Harnessing the Web to Drive Membership Value and Growth Survey Summary Report 2013 (sponsored by IndigoBlue).

Celebrating Trade Association Excellence!

On Thursday 11th July we celebrated trade association best-practice excellence at the prestigious Trade Association Forum (TAF) Best Practice Awards and Dinner 2013 held at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London.

The MemberWise Network contributes by helping to judge the awards each year and this year the quality of submissions was particularly high!

After much debate Trade Association of the Year was awarded to the National Farmers' Union (NFU).

Andy Robertson, Chief Executive of the National NFU CEO Farmer's Union, said: 'I am absolutely delighted that the NFU has won these prestigious awards. The overall award of Trade Association of the Year is much-deserved recognition of the professionalism, commitment and dedication of everyone across the NFU in the work that we do for our members. I was also particularly pleased that we won the Sector Representation of the Year award for our SOS Dairy campaign, as this showed the organisation working at its most effective, with staff and members combining to make such an enormous impact.'

The Dinner provided trade associations with a great opportunity to share best-practice. The food was great, the venue was superb and the LED lightshow was innovative!

A number of MemberWise subscribers won high profile awards and these are listed on an article within our online professional networking group.

We look forward to judging in 2014 and encourage all Trade Association subscribers to consider taking part!

The Perfect Membership Scheme Update...

Since our last eUpdate senior membership and association professionals representing leading bodies including CILIP, BVA, BBSA and IOP have quality assured the first draft version of the advice sheet.

Feedback indicates the content will be of 'real use' to membership  organisations and associations wishing to develop, change or completely overhaul their existing membership schemes to meet the current and future needs/requirements of members/prospective members.

Over the coming months we will update the Like?content further (based on the feedback received) and we hope to compile a dedicated resource that will be launched later in the year.

This is a unique piece of work as it is being 100% led by long-term sector need and signals a marked change in the way we (membership and association professionals) wish to learn how to develop, change and grow.

A big thank you to our 'proof readers' for their time an we look forward to delivering this resource. A number of suppliers have come forward to support this work (and enable a dedicated launch event). If you represent a sector supplier and wish to get involved please contact:

Harnessing the web

- Harnessing the Web 2013

- 8th October

- 30 Euston Square (RCGP)

This month we catch up with Fire Industry Association Marketing Manager, Becky Reid, who will be leading a dedicated keynote session on effective use of web analytics. She gave us a brief 'snap-shot' of what delegates can expect in her keynote session:

"How do you know if your marketing campaign is working? More importantly how does your Board of Directors know? So many marketers are still not measuring the effectiveness of their activity, mostly because they don't know how. In today's climate, though, it's ever more important to be able to justify your marketing budget spend. I will give you some of my secrets and know-how to help you track and measure activity as well as to know what metrics you should be looking at"

Becky will present her keynote session along with other high profile membership body representatives doing 'great things on the web' including the RIBA, RCGP, RCOG, RSM and 20+ other success stories.

We are pleased to announce that the Deeson Group will join APT Solutions as our second Official Conference Partner. This enables us to extend our Early-Bird ticket promotion for a further 4 weeks along with our 3 places for the price of 2* group booking promotion.

And finally - Something to make you think...

Our network is all about sharing so here is our regular 'Think Piece' article submitted by Susie Kay from The Professionalism Group.

Think

This month I'm returning to a subject that is as important as it gets for the on-going welfare of non-profit organisations - how the leaders within this very varied sector are able to flourish as individuals while remaining in charge of the destiny of their organisations.

It is almost impossible to pick up an article or book about successful leaders and entrepreneurs these days without finding a story or quote about how that individual derived enormous benefit from having a mentor at some stage of their career.

Mentoring has been going on for a very long time - famous relationships include Socrates and Plato, Aristotle and Alexander the Great, and more recently Freddie Laker and Richard Branson. Indeed, government statistics show that 70% of small businesses whose leaders receive mentoring survive for five years or more, which is double the rate compared with non-mentored entrepreneurs and, in addition, they are 20% more likely to experience growth.

We know that a CEO crisis line has just published data to say that it has received twice as many calls this year as last. So, if it is true that the leaders within our sector are increasingly aware of the need to run their organisations as successful businesses while also being under incredible pressure from all sides, and if it's also true that leaders of all kinds benefit from having a mentor, why do so very few Chief Executives, senior management or Board Chairs have mentors?
